Tbh, from an european point of view, the US looks as batshit crazy as Dubai.

Somehow please tell me i'm not not the only one who thought of Vicky watching this

As an American, the US is just as crazy if not more than Dubai. All the horrible things ppl say about Dubai can easily be found in American society. Thats why whenever an American bravo fan says they're against Dubai "bc of their social/political issues" it's absolute bs. Realistically they're just islamaphobic.

the same applies to America, so why're u okay with watching the American housewives but not the Dubai ones?
Sorry but Dubai and the USA are in no way comparable in terms of key performance indicators on human rights.

These issues are “not just bs” or “Islamophobic” - copying what I put in the Dubai thread:

Emirati women live under male guardianship.
Loopholes in the law allow reduced sentences for men for killing a female relative. Honour killings can go unpunished as the victim’s family can pardon the murderer.
Marital rape is legal.
A woman in the UAE can lose her right to financial maintenance from her husband if she refuses to have sexual relations with him without a “lawful excuse.”
The majority of the population is made up of migrants - many female migrant workers have few, if any, employment rights and are at risk of labour exploitation. This is particularly true for domestic workers - e.g employers taking away their passports
Even the women in the Royal Family there have been subject to disgusting misogynistic treatment - Sheikh Mohammed abducted his 2 daughters - there was a Panorama investigation on it and it’s horrific.

That’s before you come to the issue of homosexuality being illegal.

The internet and telecomms in Dubai is also heavily censored - VoIP services (ie phone calls via WhatsApp) are banned. There is a lack of freedom of press.

Slavery is all but legal - majority of the population are migrants and make up 90% of the workforce in the UAE - because they’re migrants, they have little to no labour rights

The UAE does not have democratically elected institutions and citizens do not have any rights to change their government or form political parties.

It isn’t even remotely comparable to the US in any meaningful way.

In the US,
we had to watch a doctor get fined for giving a 10 year old rape victim an abortion (this was recent).
Some doctors can even face jail time for giving abortions. Not just doctors but even other medical professionals can get charged just for assisting in any capacity.
Women have spent time in jail and been convicted as criminals for their miscarriages bc the courts found them guilty of abortion.
Rape is only a few days to a few months in jail if you're "not a bad person for society". google Brock Turner
New mothers and pregnant women have their monthly wages reduced if they go on maternity leave. and the gov't does not provide any financial assistance.
Children deemed "illegal" are kept in literal cages for months/years. they are separated from their families and some children were even lost by the system and the families (who are also illegal) have no real help in getting their children back.
Child marriage is still legal.
Most "migrant workers" are just modern day slaves who work long grueling hours under the hot sun in farms, with severely low pay, no rights or access to any real legal help bc most of them don't have legal documents. Oh and this is completely legal for their employers to do. and no they can't just leave bc they're brought to a new state/country with no means of getting back to their homeland unless they want to go through ICE.
Inmates in prisons have jobs where they're paid like 15 cents for an hours work to make products for big brands like Victoria's Secret and Pepsi.
Choking an innocent man to death is legal if you're a cop.
shooting a child from the back is totally legal if its a black kid wearing a hoodie in a predominantly white neighborhood and the killer is white.
Native American women are disappearing and being murdered at alarmingly high rates but nothings being done and isn't treated like a big issue by law enforcement

Yes we can vote for our politicians but guess what the only options at our polls don't give a sh*t about what their constituents have to say. Thats why:
We've been bombing the Middle East left and right. We say we want to free the oppressed ppl and miraculously the land has oil as well.
We don't have free healthcare but instead we have the highest cost of healthcare in the world. Do you know an average hospital will charge a patient $27 for one acetaminophen pill that would cost like $10 for 100 pills at the regular pharmacy.
We have conservatives continuously and successfully passing legislation that is taking away the rights of queer people.
We have anti-semetic politicians saying Jews have space lasers and still keeping their jobs and getting re-elected.
We had a politician vote against a pro-lgbtq bill and then go attend his gay sons wedding the very next week.

Also the US censors it's contents too and even goes as far as manipulating content to fit the governments needs. Are you aware that the US gov't is working extremely hard to ban TikTok (the app with the greatest use amongst the younger generation) "bc its made in china". The gov't was recently exposed of filling Facebook and other sites with anti-vax propaganda to prevent China's vaccine from being used in Vietnam and a bunch of other SEA countries.

If you compare the actions of the US government to its own people in the past (chattel slavery, native American genocide) and now (police brutality, mistreatment of undocumented immigrants), the US IS NOT BETTER THAN DUBAI.

Also are you aware that most of the American housewives that you watched and financially helped by watching, voted for the political party that is actively trying to take away the rights of women and people of color.

I am well versed on the Roe v Wade changes and the impact that is having on women’s and girl’s right to choose. Removing this from the constitution was a terrible move. I think the issue is that it’s now down to individual states to add the right to abortion into their State constitutions - which quite a number have done. So abortion is not outright illegal in the USA. Abortion is a crime in the UAE.

I won’t get into the ins and outs of the US Justice System but I am familiar with the Brock Turner case. A woman just reporting rape in the UAE could put her at risk of crime as they see it as illicit sex - be that extra-marital or pre-marital. It isn’t illegal to have pre/extra marital relations in the USA.

The USA having free and fair elections, the right to demonstrate, the right to assembly, the right to protest etc. is absolutely better than the UAE - whether you agree with your choice of politicians or not - you are free to speak out about that without the risk of torture, prison and/or capital punishment.

The proposed TikTok ban is justified by very real concerns about data and privacy breaches by the Chinese state. This has been proven by US and UK Intelligence Services (TT has been banned from all Parliament/Government devices in the UK). In the US you don’t have even remotely comparable press, Internet and social media censorship as the UAE.

I would say the past behaviour of the US, particularly when it comes to slavery, is the exact same as the UAE. In fact, it’s worse that the UAE carries this on in the year of 2024. Women in the USA do not have to be under male guardianship. It is not illegal to be gay in the USA nor will you be put to death for having relations with someone of the same sex.

Yes, there are some similarities between the USA and the UAE (eg Capital Punishment, abortion rights in some states) but to flat out say the USA is no better than the UAE is just ignorant and not backed up by credible human rights organisations.

I've restarted OC, I used to watch it when it came out first. On the dodgy streaming sites, I swear I'm not *that* old!! I've jumped in at Season 3, couldn't manage to watch the first 2 season. Its too cringe with the camera and interviews as it happens. Can't wait for Lynne and her chunky bracelets😂

I've been thinking about starting OC while I'm on Mat leave, I tried the first season and felt the same about it being cringe 😂 maybe I'll also start at 3 and see how I get on!

I felt season 3 was alright enough to watch, and you get Tamra from the start too! They've only just started going for dinner together now, they were very separate story lines before that.

That’s actually a good point it was initially more seperate story lines lol maybe that’s something the failing franchises should revisit again since half the cast don’t want to be in the same room as one another I.e NJ and Vanderpump rules lol

Abortion isn’t outright illegal in the UAE . It’s actually easier to get one in the UAE bc u don’t have some parts of the country outright banning it like u do in the US.

You can’t actually freely speak out about social or political issues in the US without repercussions. Yes we have our 1st amendment that gives us the right to free speech and assembly but guess what we also have laws and loopholes limiting it. You can actually see it in real time now with the campus encampments. People in PUBLIC spaces were literally assaulted by police for peacefully protesting.

Also if you post something that feels too defamatory about the president, even as an average citizen, you will have the FBI literally knocking at your doorsteps. Shit even Asa on Shah’s of Sunset, mentioned how she had literal agents at her doors bc she was speaking too much publicly about Islam and Iran.

If pre-marital sex laws actually jailed women in Dubai, Stanbury would already be serving jail time. Also if a woman alleges rape in the US but the guy claims it was prostitution and the woman can’t directly prove it was rape, the woman can also be jailed bc prostitution is illegal in the US. A woman can also legally be penalized under defamation if she legally can’t prove rape allegations and again in the US it is hard to win rape cases.

As for TikTok, there was no proof of connection to a “Chinese state”. The only thing the senators could prove was that some of the servers for storing data are based in China but that’s the same for Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc), Amazon and other big corporations. Yet TikTok has been singled out. If you looked at the actual congressional hearing where they questioned the Singaporean founder and CEO, u would see how stupid and racist the senators were. They literally would not listen to the man when he said he had no connections to China and wasn’t Chinese. He also has an American wife but he was still Chinese in the senators eyes bc “all Asians look the same” 😒.

If you think chattel slavery is the exact same as modern day slavery in Dubai, you have something seriously wrong with you. Watch the episode on Potomac where Gizelle’s father shows the torture devices they used on the slaves. I can’t even put into words how messed up and scary chattel slavery in America was. Oh and chattel slavery was openly accepted and loved by half of America until the 1800s. We still have laws and politicians who work diligently to make sure black people have a harder time climbing the social ladder in America.

I also pointed out on my previous post how the US practices modern day slave labor like Dubai, with my migrant farm workers example and jailed inmates example.

US didn’t legalize gay marriage until 2015. Bravo and all of us on this sub are older than that. Even though it’s legalized, gay couples still have to overcome obstacles to actually get married.

The government won’t kill you for being gay but a regular civilian can and they can possibly legally get away with it like rapist and pedophiles do in the American justice system.

Conversion therapy camps are still a thing in the US.

Yeah Dubai’s make guardianship laws are horrible but that doesn’t automatically make it worse than America. America has its own inhumane current practices that can go head to head with Dubai’s guardianship laws.

The US funds and gives legal status to a lot of the major human rights organizations. If they speak out against the US gov’t they risk losing their legal credibility or funding. Look at what’s happening to the UN now that it’s calling out Israel and America. Also all the human rights organizations are a business at the end of the day, that’s why only like 1/10 or less of donations actually go towards helping ppl. Most of it is spent on “internal stuff”.

As many of us Americans say “America is a third world country with a Gucci belt”. It gives the facade of wealth and prosperity when it’s actually a country ridden with social problems and a careless government filled with ppl only there to make money.

I physically cannot start a HW's series without starting from the VERY start.
Not knowing the FULL background is just impossible for me.
