Tennis #3 🎾

This article details exactly why Murray had to retire now - and the long-term health implications if he didn't. Not sure how much of this is new information, but I hadn't read the exact details before.

That can happen to anyone with a slipped disc etc. But it’s quite rare.

I’m very sad to not be able to watch him play anymore but he couldn’t go on forever and his body is telling him so.

Saw this article yesterday, in the past 6 months we’ve had this, Swiatek saying she had no WTA players to follow as a kid and Sabalenka saying she doesn’t watch women’s tennis cause men are more logical and stronger. A lot of the current generation of women’s players don’t deserve what their predecessors fought for.

I thought sabalenka was misquoted on that and she actually prefers the mens as she can enjoy it as entertainment without thinking she has to analyse while watching women's tennis.

I think lots of wta players say yeah we'd like to do 5 sets just to shut it down. When they actually prefer the current system, which I don't blame them for. If they really wanted to they could protest like they did 50 years ago to get equal prize money at the USO.

I’ll have to have a look, I actually like Sabalenka so it was disappointing when she said it.

I think if they want to do BO3 that’s fine, but putting it down to women having periods is icky to me. Women in normal jobs have it bad enough that people worry we’ll take days off for periods, be too emotional or even spend too long in the toilets. It’s upsetting to see a high profile figure give validity to that misogyny.

The whole wta has been a right mess for years. But I can't believe just how chaotic it's got during the Olympics. I can't keep up with it all and it can't be winning many new fans.

Anyone else wanting mooooooosetti to get the gold?

Knock 'em both out. I want Carlos to have lots of competition for the next decade

Ffs It's a sad day when 37 yo Novak Djokovic is still reaching major finals and Carlos is the only one of the current lot that can beat him.

& Jannik, but he’s in a constant battle with his own immune system lately

I wonder who the next big stars will be, a lot of the next gen are getting on a bit now and don’t seem like they have the fight to ever make it big. It can’t just be Carlos and Jannik when he’s not ill

I was saying this during wimbledon there's a real lack of depth just now in the men's game. Even during the peak big 4 era you still had players like Del Potro, Wawrinka, Tsonga who could on there day beat any of them. Carlos really needs proper rivals imo because there will be an argument he's cleaning up in a weak era.

Sinner could provide it but he's very flakey just now.

You never know you might get a few young amazing players breaking through soon.

Lorenzo turned 22 this year, he’s had a bit of rough patch but it seems like fatherhood has made him better haha 😂 he needs to work on a few things, but I think he can turn into a contender. There’s this whole in-between gen that’s the problem. Meddy is the only one out of that gen that has won a slam.

As for Novak - I will roll my eyes right out of my head if at 37 and what’s most likely his last Olympics he wins his first gold medal 🙄 I believe in Carlos though and think he’ll win in straight sets again.
But yeah, what an unsatisfying rivalry between these two :/

There's still loads of time for types like Holger or Lorenzo to come through. But Casper and stefanos may now never win a slam.

This is only the second final Novak has got through to this year. With the state he looked in the QF I'm shocked he won that. Best of 5 sets is going to be tough on him - especially if it's the daytime heat.
