Teen Mom USA (The Next Chapter and Family Reunion) #5

Exactly. So many people seem to think it was an open adoption, for some reason.
Yeah, it's always mentioned!
The 'semi-open adoption' meant that visits, calls etc were entirely up to the discretion of Brandon and Teresa and they have the right to deny visits. B&T never went against the agreement as they had full control from the very start.
However, B&T definitely gave the impression that they would be in regular contact though, and it seems they kept moving the goalposts.

The whole situation is just so sad.

Both Catelynn & Tyler come from broken homes with financial instability, drug issues and domestic violence.
They were completely taken advantage of.

Brandon and Theresa used a Christian adoption agency called 'Bethany Christian Services' which apparently sources low income working class couples/women for married same sex couples who want to adopt. Catelynn's mother did not give consent for the adoption to happen which is why we see Carly being handed over to Brandon and Theresa in the car park of the hospital, and not inside.
I always thought this was quite grim.

Does anyone remember the scene when Dawn (the adoption counsellor) met with C & T to go through the papers that they had signed 10+ years previous? It was heartbreaking. It was clear that they were too young to fully comprehend what they were even signing.

I think misleading them about the terms was intentional. Tm_chatter posted loads of screen shots about how dodgy BCS and the fact that they’ve been in multiple law suits, including child trafficking. They’re all about making money and don’t care about morals along the way. And just because it’s semi-open, it still makes them crappy people for denying visits for no reason - and for taking advantage of them to get Carly in the first place, Dawn too of course. They legally don’t have to but it’s still immoral when they’re so desperate to see her. Tyler recently said B&T still haven’t given a reason but it’s been confirmed it’s not because Carly doesn’t want to.

I always have bought it was open adoption I didn’t realised there was a middle ground between open and closed. I don’t know why I thought that, has catelyn and Tyler always described it as open? Maybe they weren’t completely aware? As mentioned above the paperwork episode was awful I can’t watch it cos you know that’s the moment they made that final decision and cate still doesn’t look convinced. As grown as I am I still get emotional on the episode where they handed her over and they kept the blanket 😢
The whole birth episode is tense when cate is wanting time with Carly whether that be good for her or not, Dawn is constantly pressuring them to hand Carly over. Theres no regard for the emotions of cate and Tyler in that moment IMO

Did you see his introduction video? He seems like such a sweet kid

Yes he is very sweet, and so grown up now!

Someone on Reddit made me remember the last visit was when Cate’s family ruined things and April drank

I remember cate said she crossed a boundary for her by drinking but did it cause an issue at the get together overall?I can’t remember at the time. I know this was when cate fell out with April thought cate had been firm with her boundaries with April. Remember when April took care and her friend dress shopping? That was horrendous
---
It is difficult to defend B&T but I remember an episode where they had asked for no pictures of Carly to be put online by C&T, and Tyler uploaded a picture to Instagram of her and at the time he had 2 million followers. This was possibly a reason why they denied visits. He should have respected their wishes.

Yeah they did and Tyler was quite vocal about his “rights” which was very wrong of him. I can’t remember tho if there had already been a few communication issues before then? Could have been the beginning of the end

I’ve always found Dawn the adoption counsellor unrealistic. Surely once the adoption agreement is implemented…she’d then be hands off and uncontactable. Who is paying her for acting as advisor/go-between…for 15 years??? Brandon and Teresa’s adoption fees can’t be covering all of that extra time/work. I imagine that generally once the adoption is finalised, if the birth parents have any need to discuss the term and any problems they are having with the open arrangement….they would be told by the agency to consult a lawyer if they don’t understand what they signed up to.

I feel like Dawn’s repeated inclusion in the franchise is to protect BCS…imagine the optics if Cate openly came out to say that she felt she didn’t understand the process/contract and felt pressured into it and now felt it was the wrong decision. Cate can’t say if it was the wrong decision…because right from the beginning she’s been publicly praised and by the show itself for the maturity in making that decision.

You can say they made their own decision…but everyone makes their decisions based on influences…and both Cate’s mother and Tyler’s father were strongly anti-adoption, and did it with lots of shouting and swearing and lack of calm discussion. So how much influence did this kindly-tempered Dawn have on them? To a 16 year-old from a difficult home…connecting to an understanding and kindly natured adult could cause a hold over them.

Although I don’t think they were mature enough to make the decision, they have had years to grow up…yet Tyler has repeatedly prioritised his tv stardom over the relationship with Carly. For that reason I don’t respect him as a father.

on the reunion…I see right through his ‘learning Spanish’…it’s just a ploy to guarantee some extra airtime.
---
On another topic…anyone else think Chey and Zach had a fake row…to get themselves extra airtime for a therapy session?

I thought the same, but I guess this is part of the 'aftercare' of an adoption, and of course it is something for MTV to film.

I'm guessing it is Bethany Christian Services.

100%, C& T were taken advantage of and manipulated by both Dawn and Bethany Adoption Services.

Does anyone know what’s going on with this series? I’ve managed to watch ep 1-4 on my stick but nothing is even showing after that. My husband accidently signed up for paramount+ yesterday and we got 7 days free so thought I might as well watch it while it’s there and it switches from paramount to now? Do they just expect ppl to download and pay all the apps now?

As far as I can see the latest series isn’t on Paramount yet - on MTV
