I just don’t think a wheelchair user will work when the biggest thing they are all critiqued on is their footwork?! It’s not a fair competition to have contestants judged against different markers. The previous disabled contestants have all worked imo as they have all been able to undertake every element of the dance to some degree, but surely for a wheelchair user they will actually be judging the pros choreography and ability to move them around the floor more than the contestants skills. It just sounds like classic BBC box ticking to me.

ETA- also hard agree that the only chance of it working is with a male athlete who has the stamina and ability to “lift” the pro etc

I thought that when they talked about his mum to him on BBC Breakfast, he almost deliberately turned his reply round to talking about his dad
Yep, Bobby was cool and managed to deal with that, he was really polite when he said goodbye at the end.
Only 2 reasons to watch SCD, Booby and Angela, on the iplayer and skipping the rest of the bullshit. I miss
the early seasons so much.

How can you have two contestants say do a waltz, one able bodied and one in a wheelchair, where the able bodied contestant will be judged and marked down for poor footwork, no heel turns or fleckles (lol)? Personally I felt it was cutting it fine with Ellie last year when everyone else got judged on their frame and she was held to a different standard but this is just getting ridiculous.

It is inclusive and wheelchair dancing is a thing, but it's a totally different discipline - I can't understand how they could judge it on Strictly. I'd love to see a show of celebrity wheelchair users learning to dance though, that would be beautiful and they could use proper specialist wheelchair using dancers to train and judge them. Just feels a bit like Strictly would be doing it for the sake of ticking a box and it would be doing a wheelchair user a disservice with nobody on the show having any knowledge or experience of using a wheelchair, let alone dancing in one.
They did Dancing on Wheels a few years ago. They paired wheelchair users with celebs. Caroline Flack and partner won. Think Mark Foster was there as well. Brian Fortuna was one of the teachers and Kristina as well, if I remember right. The Jordan’s were judges and also Ade Adepitan.

edit:

I said a few years ago - it was 2010 (😱)

I suppose they are also not really comparing like for like anyway. Shirley has said more than once that she marks the celebs against themselves and their progression rather than the other celebs. Which does make sense in a way because how can you really compare 78 year old Angela with 20 year old Bobby with amputee Jody?

Ugh, it's when you realise 2010 was 13 years ago 😵‍💫

See, I'd like a format like this but for wheelchair using celebrities learning wheelchair dancing.

See, I'd like a format like this again but for actual wheelchair using celebrities. It just feels a bit disability inspiration porn to have able bodied celebs dancing in wheelchairs.
The able bodied celebs weren’t in wheelchairs, they were just partnering the person in the wheelchair

If that's the case it should definitely be Neil - having an untrained pro just seems ridiculously unfair to a wheelchair using celebrity. Neil clearly has a lot of training and skills which haven't been shown yet - I know he's a creep but he's well respected within his team and has a lot of experience and accolades. Maybe this is his chance to show his worth?
I might be misrembering this but am sure Brian , the American pro, did a show about wheelchair dancing as he taught it. I cannot remember if it was a one off or series

Off-topic but watching that video reminded me of how weirdly intense Brian Fortuna was.

Count Fortuna was epicly intense! And the Ali & Brian soopafans were utterly terrifying; they made a pilgrimage to various places where they had trained. I’m still amazed that the authorities didn’t find Ali locked in a cellar somewhere while the weirdos tried to clone her a husband out of fragments of Brian’s DNA they’d scraped off the training room floor.

Shows the Kai/AJ obsessives up for the amateurs they clearly are 🙄

That said, this is still one of my favourite Strictly dances.

Leyton W is a professional dancer …. And has appeared in the west end. He used to run classes for dancers!

Ehh, who cares? I’d hate Strictly if they were all tit at the beginning! I enjoy their being a good mix of experience & talent. Historically, the trained dancers don’t win & that’s fine. But they at least provide some decent dancing to watch early on!

So, is Nigel Harmon this year’s Helen Skelton, in that 99% of people are convinced he’s taking part, but he gets announced about a month after everyone else? 😁

Same here. I bloody love a ringer. Who wants to spend 2 hours watching 15 duffers being forcibly dragged around the floor like errant shopping trolleys?
Some will be good from the start, some will be rubbish and improve, some will be rubbish and never improve, some will be a joy to watch no matter how bad they are and regardless of whether they ever improve (Gavin&Katya 4evs❤️), some will be interminably dull no matter whether they can barely put one foot in front of the other or whether they have 20 years of dance experience.
It’s not an actual dance competition, it never has been; it’s a light entertainment show with a dance-based premise. There can be 40+ years between the oldest and youngest contestants in a series; it’s never going to be a level playing field in terms of ability. 🤷‍♀️
