I think it's that he's trying just a little too hard so it comes off forced. I wasn't a big fan of John's either, most of their routines were lacking something for me. John always seemed a little too reserved and like he wasn't quite giving it his all. I'm sure he was doing his best but I always got the impression that nerves were holding him back from performing/losing himself in the dance. Helen had the same problem and I didn't really like most of her dances either. John and Layton seem to have opposite problems - my reaction to most of John (and Helen's) routines was 'that was good/great but would have been great/spectacular if they gave it 10% more' and last night Layton needed to give it 10% less.
 
Vito seems to have borrowed Tyler's tiny bra from the costume dept for the Pride of Britain awards
