I did think Shirley over did it with her criticism for him however maybe because it's I've watched the show for so long but I always feel a bit dubious seeing certain things. It was almost like TPTB wanted him to be pulled down a bit in scores and comments this week so he could have more of a journey to show he is not doing a Kelvin Fletcher 2.0. Its obvious that Layton will be the highest scorer overall but he will obviously not win the show and he is a very ringey ringer so this by default gives Nigel the space to hide more of his experience and go on more of a journey.

Me too! I've watched Strictly and the American DWTS for years and I'm very cynical. I think they plan, plot, script many things that we think are spontaneous, and included in that are judges' comments and scores. That's why they have writers, extra choreographic help (or unhelpfulness), etc. But most people get annoyed when I bring it up, so never mind me, but I'll keep my tin hat on in the corner.
