Not sure if someone’s made the comment already but I think along with the dancing skill, I feel Jon would have come further in the competition than Nicola regardless because he has more charisma and is showing much more of his own personality.
We’ve seen from most athletes that they can be a bit stilted and put the game face on when it comes to the judges and critique. Especially with Nicola’s discipline as a boxer, unless she’d really chosen to show her real self she’d always have that emotional distance and wouldn’t let herself go.

Even though I liked John pre-Strictly, I was a bit 🤨 when he was announced as I thought they'd try a get a bigger name as part of the first male same sex pair. But after the first few weeks, I could see why he was a smart booking - after last year, they needed someone who was both charismatic AND a good dancer so they had a chance at a decent run

Nicola was way more famous and was quite nice and smiley, but just had the wrong personality for Strictly. After a week or so, she just came across as quite annoying and childish, and her and Katya never seemed to click. Just shows that the biggest name isn't always the best way to go

I can see why the show were very keen to have a same sex booking and partnership that actually worked this year

God love Tilly. Her couple's choice was just 'I love my dad? Also here's a dance to a musical that my very supportive parents took me too many times?'

Which at least was an honest presentation of the situation and if you have to do CC, I'd rather that. I quite liked Dan's approach as well. He basically said 'I like my job and isn't Old Trafford cool'. Which. Fair enough.
Yes I don't mind that. It's good when famous people don't try and embellish their background to try and make themselves more interesting. I love AJ but her family look hugely supportive and warm, and they've all done really well for themselves. If I had 8 kids I wouldn't be able to afford dance lessons either. The bill for my 3 to learn to swim was at one point £75 a month, so they couldn't do any other activities. They would get a clip round the ear if they said they were deprived! She should have gone the " I love my family" route like Tilly!

Yes, I would have preferred to see that angle from her too - it seemed a bit disingenuous which isn't like her at all and did make it seem like another cynical CC sob story for the sake of it.

There was still quite a lot of 'I love my family' chat in there alongside the 'finally getting to live my dream' stuff, to be fair. I understand where you're coming from, tho

The bit that makes me always roll my eyes on reality/human interest/reality shows is when people talk about the towns that they come from. I think it's rarely done well. That's the part of AJ's VT that I couldn't quite connect to the rest of it (but this may also be my bias against it in general)

Tbf i read an interview with AJ the other day in which she said they were so poor they had no shower and got washed with buckets. So I guess she was really alluding to real hardship which explains why dancing was such a dream for her. I thought it was sad when Craig said if she’d been trained young she could have been a dancerZ she looked overwhelmed

Oh wow - that does give more context. See, they could have talked about that, but I guess they wanted to convey the appropriate prime-time light entertainment vibes.

I think this is actually what annoys me about CC in general. Everyone has a story, but the packaging of the VTs run the run the risk of being mawkish or platitudinous instead of heartfelt and genuine. And the do hit the mark sometimes! But not every time.

I know we have all slagged off CC and although I loved JJ's last night I don't think I really 'got' it 100%, but I liked this post by the choreographer Lukas McFarlane - I find it interesting how ideas can be translated into dance, even if I don't always 100% grasp them in contempowaft mode!

And this is why I love strictly, if they don’t win, they already did, because of the power of what they achieved every week. Lifting the glitter ball trophy is the dream but to get to the final, for so many of the contestants it’s about pushing themselves week on week to do things they never thought possible. This has been a superb series!

Looks like we’ll all need to clear our diaries for 1920 tonight then, don’t think there’s going to be a spoiler at this rate other than the earlier unconfirmed one.

Dances 1:
Rhys - tango, it was fine, would have preferred sharper. Loved Nancy's outfit

AJ - QS think she made a couple of mistakes, Kai was too fast for her, she looked unsure and couldn't see footwork under the bauble dress. Loved their traditional look.

JJ - couples choice, nope I hate contemporary, liked the walking on back thing. The choreography reminded me of Amy & Karim's routine. Not dancing just stationary movements.

Rose - waltz -Loved the dance and her dress.

Dances 2:
Rhys -samba, he tried so hard to keep it less energetic, but I still found it frenetic and clunky reminded me of his first ever dance and I hate his solo Kermit moves.

AJ - rumba, no hips from her and didn't like her hand finishes. The best bits were her arching back steps. She looked gorgeous in blue and her make up was good.

John - jive, he did well with that song, he didn't have high energy and Johannes did a Janette (OTT).

Rose - Tango, fabulous although j didn't like her rubber leg kicking at the end. And Giovanni's blue eyeshadow very local am dram make up.

Tess saying that John wearing his heart on his sleeve, ironic as he was in that sleeveless vest 😆.

I'd like AJ, Rose and John in the final.

Solo kermit moves is so accurate 😂😂😂

Pretty much agree with all of this! And yes, Rose's leg thing in the AT was the only thing that made it slightly less than perfect for me. It was just a bit too much

I don't think so. A J has been criticised constantly on this thread for sob stories and for crying. Far more than J +J.
I agree re CC. Didn't it used to be that they chose between contemporary, jazz and something else? I don't think contemporary should be in it. It's too free form and too ' Oh you don't get it if you don't like it, which is basically what Matthew Bourne said about Tom Fletchers dance. If you need to have a degree in dance to understand and enjoy something, it's not a good dance. A lot of the CC are like that, especially when they are contemporary, which is rarely entertaining or good imo.
Wasn’t it contemporary, jazz and street?

Agree with almost all of this except the last bit
