Solo travel advice & recommendations

1
Hello! I haven't read every post on this thread but I have travelled solo pretty extensively...America, South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia...any questions just ask. I would say to go somewhere you will feel pretty comfortable first in terms of safety of the place, weather, language, transport links...and build up your courage from there. I travelled a lot - half with friends, half solo - and absolutely loved it. My travelling days are behind me for the moment- hello mortgage! - but happy to help anyone thinking about biting the bullet.

I want to do the Norway Fjords and was looking at a 7 night one on the Iona next Summer, the price quickly racks up though when you're on your own. Don't know if it would be better to fly into Bergen and see if I can do a day boat trip from there x
Probably if your main goal is the destination and not the cruise experience itself (not sure if I would enjoy it or not tbh) you might be better off making your own way there x

Anyone ever done a cruise on their own?

Kind of, I booked with an ex and another couple and we split up before we went so I went with the other couple but didn't spend much time with them. It was lovely, all the staff looked after me extra well when they knew I was alone. I booked trips for the days off the boat and always had a group take me under their wing 😊

I’ve always wanted to try a cruise as well. I just don’t understand how the drinks work, do you have to pay extra? I see drinks packages when I search about it but can’t see the option on how you book a drinks package when you book the cruise?

I found a company that does shorter cruises from and to destinations within Norway

This one's a 3 day cruise so I can spend some time on my own exploring before and after

Yes you pay extra or sometimes included when you book, I upgraded after booking as had the basic package included. There is different packages, I went top tier which included all cocktails and named spirits, was only £10 a day cheaper than the basic, which was roughly the cost of one cocktail a day

Does anyone know if it's possible to travel to the countryside abroad without being able to drive? I've seen some gorgeous Tuscan farmhouses on Airbnb that aren't too expensive and I'd absolutely love to stay in one one day but they all say you need a car to get there.
I don't drive so hiring one is not an option. Would a taxi or a private transfer be possible or is it too far out? And would it be crazily expensive? Should I give up on my Tuscan dream? 😅 TIA

I would say it is very difficult. In tourist season (july/august) maybe but you definitely need.to.organise it before you go there. Some Airbnb places have drivers they can advise you of but then you do need to think you might be in the middle of nowhere for a while without shops etc in walking distance (depends where obviously)

I’m going to be spending a couple of solo days in New York soon. I’ve been a few times before so done all of the obvious stuff, but my last visit was about 10 years ago so wondering if anyone has top tips for things to do & see that are either new-ish or a bit off the usual tourist track? Not planning on venturing too far from Manhattan if I can help it!

Have you been to the highline? It’s one of my fave spots in the city and I visit every time I go back.

What part of town are you planning to stay in? What kind of food do you like?

No I haven’t yet! The Highline was on the list of possibly things to do so sounds like it needs to be a definite. I’m staying a couple of blocks from Bryant Park and will eat pretty much anything!

I stayed in Williamsburg which had a lot of interesting street art. If there are any films or TV series you are interested in then they do the tours which can be really interesting. I found this online:

Oh yes I love walking the high line any time of year and day bc it’s diff vibe with the greenery and flowers as well as light for photos. I saw one of the nyc housewives on my last stroll 😂

If you like art, walking around the chelsea galleries are amazing. Most of them free and always changing. Some of the popular ones like David zwirner with yayoi kusama sold out months in advance bc of the artist. Then chelsea market is closeby and there’s great coffee and food there. Like black seed bagels

If you like food festival type things smorgasburg is fun and there’s one at oculus now…don’t have to trek into Brooklyn.

Agree with @Zulkraa there’s some fun tours in nyc. I saw one for sex and the city.

I did the Sex and the City tour last time I was there so other tours like that are a good shout! Thank you!
