Solo travel advice & recommendations

I'm a big advocate for G Adventures, I've done two trips with them now. There's a good balance of alone time and group time, and I made a good friend from my first tour a few years ago who I'm still in touch with. They might be more expensive than doing it on your own but the reassurance of having a guide and taking the pressure off in terms of travel/accom/activities is priceless, especially in a non-English speaking country.

I have some time off between work at Xmas- 27.12 to 29.12 and I’m tempted to fly to Edinburgh to get use to solo travelling and being in airports (terrible anxiety in them!)

- flights - £55
- hostel - £66

Should I do it? I’ve always wanted to go Espically when the Xmas market is on

Yes! I love Edinburgh and it’s a place I’d love to go back to.

Edinburgh is lovely but honestly the xmas markets are faux German shite, and you’ll be going after Xmas anyway.

Tbh I wouldn’t buy anything 😂 I think all Xmas markets are tit. But I just want to go, experience it so I can say I’ve been!

Has anyone driven to Birmingham airport? I once drove in the Bham city and I survived it so that’s the main thing lol but it has made me think twice about going to the airport there lol

If possible take the train. Where I live the train takes you direct to the airport

Do it Edinburgh is the best place I've been in the UK

Has anyone ever booked an air BnB that's new? Opened this month so should have pics then we aren't going till late next year so should have plenty of time for pics and reviews and it's free cancellation. Do you think I should also book a back up place and keep an eye on the review of the new place? They are both free cancellation

I think I possibly decided to go to Costa Rica In 2026 for anyone who went what month did you go? That's the only thing putting me off as June is in the rainy season but from what I've read isn't too bad

I would def have a backup place. I don’t love staying with new hosts these days as a lot of people join the app and just don’t understand the culture of hosting. They really need to work out kinks. I have stayed at a string of terrible places one was even a super host. I got my money back but it was really annoying to deal with while traveling - and finding a new place.

I'm an Edinburghian so obviously I say yay! It's a great place to wander aimlessly around at Christmas time.

Thanks we ended up booking another place as the first person cancelled my booking. This is another new place but last time I looked had one review

Does anyone have any recommendations of where I could go, maybe in spring time, that is out in nature but also easily accessible. I don't drive but I want to experience beautiful landscapes and fresh air. I'm thinking maybe Switzerland or Austria but don't know about the specifics. Also open to any suggestions!

Not Switzerland or any of the Alps really. The snow melt in spring is not pretty. It’s brown, sludgy and muddy.

The Greek Islands would be pretty good at that time of year and walkable as the weather isn’t too hot yet.

OKay. So I posted a couple of weeks ago about going to Edinbrugh a while ago. I've decided to go in March. I was going ot go by plane but after looking at parking price, it's actually cheaper to get the train. But I've always wanted to drive to Scotland (long family tradition whice I've never done!) so I'm tempted to go by train by myself but then see if my mum or friends want to come with me in the car to help spilt the cost.

But any other recommodations on where an axious female solo traveller can go? i really want to go on plane somewhere to Europe!

I went to Barcelona recently on my own and really enjoyed it

Germany is easy to navigate (literally and metaphorically!) as a female solo traveller. Madrid/Seville/Valencia/Malaga if you fancy somewhere a bit warmer.

Or you could even try somewhere like Jersey/Gibraltar/Malta which feel a bit more UK-ish if you’re feeling a bit anxious about it.

Porto is a great option - I went in March this year. The weather can be a bit iffy though so might want to go in the summer. I also went to Palma de Mallorca this year which was so much lovelier than I was expecting!
