Sir Keir Starmer #2

The private pension argument is such a fail. My mum is 92 and has an absolutely tiny pension from my deceased father. It makes her £10 over the threshold for winter fuel payments . I’ve just sent her a heated blanket because I’m worried about her being warm for the next six months.
---
Tiny, disabled 92 year old woman worrying about paying her heating bills while Starmer and his twats hand out free money to people who broke the law to get to our country. How can that be right?

Who is he handing out handing out free money to, and do you have any evidence to support it?

Of course it isn't but why would you be living in a place that is £2k a month if you're a pensioner who can barely afford to heat their house?

If we're going back to the winter fuel allowance, an extra £5 a week won't help with a £2k rent either.
Haven’t there been a massive increase in rents recently? in NI rents are around £1200 month that’s unheard of for this region I’d imagine London would be in excess of that?

People that worked for the civil service were on paltry private pensions but kept the country ticking over .

That’s the point I’m making some pensioners are already struggling without cutting vital payments, it’s a myth they’re all living it up in Benidorm.

While I don't disagree that there may be some pensioners just over the threshold that need it, I think there has to be a cut off point somewhere. While there are some that are struggling, there are many who do not need the payment at all.

My friend has two young grandchildren that she looks after while their are at work. Not every day or all day, but enough. It saves the parents paying for childminding and meals. If they have to work it a bit late they know the children are looked after.
On non childminding days they heating is off as long as possible.
On childminding days the heating goes on when the children get there after nursery or school.
She is dreading the winter holidays and fuel bills when she has them all day.

Those poor pensioners who are all so destitute they can afford to do their shopping in Waitrose and M&S🤭

The myth that pensioners are wealthy. Some are - obviously, but if you just miss out on pension credit (as many do), because you have a small work based pension (and some are so small, that they won’t even fund one monthly household bill).
This is the trap that many working class pensioners have fallen into. It’s a grim retirement, when you can’t afford a taxi to take you to the supermarket (because you can’t carry shopping bags) and rely on relatives to buy your clothes.
This is aside from scrimping on the heating - I have seen this for myself. People who have worked all their lives - living tike this is a disgrace.

Plus the benefits paid for multiple wives even though polygamy is against the law in UK .

You don’t get your eyes opened until you see first hand exactly what the elderly endure .Some people are in for a mighty big shock.

Those veterans being forced to watch someone who appears to despise pensioners laying a wreath. They must have felt sick to their stomachs. Not to mention that po-faced hag Cooper who’s supposed to be protecting the borders they fought for but has no intention of doing so. Absolutely vile.
Yes, and she also goes by the name of balls, says alot really.

Child benefit rules are a nonsense. I earned £50k as a single parent, I never got a penny from my son's dad so our household ran entirely on my income. I had to pay tax on it and go through a whole ridiculous self assessment rigmarole because I earned over 45k.
Whereas my smug twit colleague and his equally smug wife who each earned just under 45k a year got the full amount with no tax.
Yet again penalized for being a single parent!

As someone who hopes to live long enough to become a pensioner, I don't begrudge them the winter fuel allowance. Being old is expensive. Lots of home owners get told to downsize don't they, as they age, realised the capital in their house? My elderly neighbours house sold recently for £450k. Sounds a lot doesn't it? But it's not where we live on the outskirts of London. We have a lot of old people locally, and there's quite a few sheltered housing developments. But a flat in those is at least £300k, plus the service costs are astronomical (one I saw was £15k.a year). So if you live more than 10 years you're screwed. Possibly less than that if you're relying on the capital to also pay your living costs.

Hopefully they’re in good health if one needs to move to a nursing home they’re totally screwed. People are deluding themselves about how much money pensioners actually need…Child benefit rules are insane if a couple can earn 90k but lone parents are penalised for earning practically half 🙄 a lone parent would have more expenses to factor in.

M&S have always been canny offering a good range of high quality traditional &/or classic dishes for one person at a reasonable price.
For many a year I would queue at the checkout behind local elderly ladies with a few selected tasty items. I am glad they spent their money on keeping well fed. So please don’t diss older folk on limited income taking good care of themselves.

I used to stash my elderly frail mum’s fridge with M&S dishes which her home help would nuke for her, she tried Waitrose/Tesco/Sainsbury dish-a-likes, just not good enough, not tasty or as generous so in effect a waste of money.

Little old ladies who used to shop throughout the week & cook from scratch have standards, bring up families on a tight budget - they have standards & taste buds…& they know how to price out what they buy.

I wasn’t dissing them I was pointing out that M&S food prices are not as extravagant as some people think.

I thought it was the younger generation that’s supposed to be overly sensitive to perceived criticism. Apparently not. Is there even a ‘snowflake generation’?

I really wouldn't bother justifying your comment.

There are clearly some on here whom are more than happy to stick the boot into Pensioners. Regardless of their income and wealth.

Funny that many whom are happy to do so, generally have a 'be kind' mentality.

Buying a few items from M&S and Waitrose occasionally is not a sign of 'wealth'.

What they forget is one day they will be old too - and certainly wouldn't appreciate the then younger generation taking the pi** out of them.
