How rare is it for a party member to state in such a blatant way as Dianne Abbot has that a Prime Minister isn’t fit for purpose? She could have restrained herself to disagreeing with him on the one issue…but she took it further and claimed he ‘has no feel for politics’ etc.
outside of a leadership contest, does this happen much? I can imagine Keir wants her head on a block.
Well, firstly she's not wrong, but secondly, Starmer tried to manoeuvre her out before the election but failed: so no love lost on either side. She's got absolutely nothing to lose. In fact, from an interview she gave soon after Starmer was forced to let her stand in the elections, she pretty much said that she had been on the verge of quitting until she realised that Starmer was trying to force her out. That's when she decided to stand her ground, and she won. He won't have been happy about that.
In the wake of Frank Heston's racist comments about her, she said that Starmer treated her like a 'non-person' at the time, and hadn't reach out to her personally. So, clearly, from her point of view, she's in a 'no f*cks given' state of mind where he's concerned. And he's pretty much powerless against her unless she messes up again as with her racism letter and gives him a real excuse to remove the whip. I was surprised that she didn't vote against the government in the two-child benefit cap vote. That suggests, she doesn't want to lose the whip again unnecessarily, but she'll continue sniping from the sides, but just staying within bounds.
I suggest that Streeting is the person that Starmer needs to keep an eye out for. He's clearly quietly on manoeuvres. Although, the reality is it really isn't that easy for Labour to remove a leader, let alone the PM: the party isn't relentlessly ruthless like the Tories. So, Starmer will be pretty safe barring a personal scandal or something completely catastrophic happening.
