I don’t think the internet has helped with this. Back in t’olden days, if you were in your 40’s and you were obsessed with TS (or anyone really) you’d have to keep it to yourself for fear of being seen as a weirdo and it would, in most cases, just burn out. Now, you can always find somewhere on the internet with like minded people to egg you on (and that goes for any age tbh). Tumblr especially is a magnet for people with an obsession with a fandom. I always go back to the Outlander fans on there that I stumbled on after I’d watched the first season and they are literally INSANE and they’re mostly women in their 60’s-upwards.
Agree 100%! Plus social media makes it so easy to follow celebrities and feel connected to them, when in reality you do not know them at all. You’re right, most fan bases are completely bonkers online - I just enjoy what I like and stay far away from online communities for my own sanity!

My 40 year old husband is a swiftie. He called her Tay-Tay once and I had to ask him to never say that again!

I think there is a fair amount of escapism that comes with fangirling - many people are miserable or have conditions that predispose them to obsessing. I used to frequent many music messageboards and looking back it is quite clear a lot of the people there had issues or were neurodivergent. I am late diagnosed ADHD and it now explains so much of why I'd get quite fixated on songs, lyrics and artists my whole life! But yes some fandoms are totally batshit and I've met some right fruitloops!

It’s people like this that I just find odd. Maybe because I’d be far too lazy to go to this effort haha

My main issues with Taylor are firstly the parasocial relationships she cultivates with her fans (many at a vulnerable age) to make money off of. It goes beyond just standard marketing to me.

And secondly how is she progressive in anyway. She's a 30 year old woman who still sings and acts like a teenager and makes music all about men, finding a man, relationships etc etc. It's like Love Island, everything defined by having a partner. Sure some of her songs are good, but let's not pretend she is some kind of trailblazer or is a model of being an independent woman.

As others have said she is just a bit bland. My brother gave me the devestating news that they have a swiftie in the house. It’s all harmless though in terms of young girls liking the music. Everyone spunks money on things they are fans of and probably if we look back at our teenage years it was probably all balls. I wouldn’t pay for one of her concerts but if I got free tickets I would probably go to see what kind of show she puts on.
She will never be an icon like Celine though.

Fandoms are all bonkers. They spring up around the weirdest of things. Often, they start quite benignly with people getting together to share an interest, then the in-jokes start and outsiders start scratching their heads in confusion, then the next thing you know, people are building shrines in their houses and writing fuckawful fanfic about their subjects as children.

I disliked Taylor and find her music dull but then watched a documentary and I found her to come across as quite genuine and iiirc she got upset about the fact her record company / management were discouraging her from supporting the LGBT community because the Country fans wouldn't like it or something. Don't know if I'm being gullible but she came across well and does seem quite vulnerable and naive in some ways. Will probably get roasted for this but I suspect she is neurodivergent or has some mental health issues that means she writes the songs that she does. They're not my cup of tea, the lyrics make me cringe a bit but I can see why her younger fans feel so connected to her.

This raise so many questions and I need some kind of deep dive psychological evaluation on it. Who or what is this for? Do they think she’s going to pass by one day, spot it and be so impressed that she says ‘will you be my husband/wife/best friend?’ Would having a secret basement shrine be better or worse than making it this public and phoning the papers to advertise your insanity to the world? Will they look back one day and cringe themselves out of existence at how embarrassing this is or do they genuinely not care?
