I actually like Lauren's look. Liquid eyeliner and no or nude lipstick is by default look if I wear make up (though not as thick a line for daytime now as it doesn't look good at my age). I like her hair. It's a fab colour and looks healthy and thick. She looked ace in a clip wearing a beret she has up. I also think she is a natural beauty.

Yeah it's like those crap facebook accounts I ❤ 80s. Lazy tit nostalgia. But people love itvand lap itbup because they can go " oh me too. We had that" and feel special and noticed. "We used to have Miss Matey...on tape".
Meaningless tit to form a bond over. Whatbdoes Stewart Lee say? "Do you remember stuff? I remember stuff?"
Yes, but I don't think that was what she was getting at. It was to set her apart, as though it were a calling

I just watched her latest video (without the sound) and it's very funny when the mask hardens. It's a hard pass from me :ROFLMAO:

Do any of you watch Michelle Phan? At the risk of sending anyone rushing to SpaceNK to stock up on Chantecaille...

This video is such a good example of decent content. She states upfront that the makeup is PR and goes on to give a very thorough demo with both wet and dry swatches of every single shade both on her arm and her eyes. She then edits in a little clip to explain how her view changed after more use. She gives application tips and practical info.

Yes I watch her and very much enjoy her videos. I love that she's not afraid to say when something isn't good or isn't worth the money. I think someone else has mentioned that this is actually Michele Wang, not Phan. I've never watched anything by the latter.

That wasn’t a bad video, but I don’t recall whether she showed us how the backs of her hands looked. Did she actually do that??

Now there is one Instagram ad that REALLY intrigues me, and that is the one for at home eyelash curling. Any chance you could try out that product please, Sali??

When SH says boastfully that she remembers the shampoo of her childhood and makeup she wore as a teen or whatever, as though it were a ... qualification, isn't that just normal? I mean, I remember all that stuff. The hideous smell of Revlon Flex shampoo, the mist in the morning light from my mother's generous use of VO5 hairspray, my nan's 4711 EDT (and the tic tacs perennially in her purse), the gold Bourjois eyeshadow I wore to my school formal, the Clairol Glint shade I used to dye my hair burgundy ... normal right? Not evidence of some special talent you were born with

😳🧐😳
Do you know I think you may have hit on one of the secrets of SH success. To comment on something quite unremarkable and sort of make it your own. As you say I can remember almost all the bath/beauty/health products used from very young - tbf until relatively recently there wasn't a huge amount of choice. Shampoo always Vosene, bath stuff - none apart from a gritty bath cube from a Christmas present, first grown up perfume Ma Griffe, the bathroom always smelling of Yardley Lavender because of Mum. It is normal isn't it? I never realised I was so special :giggle:

Yes I agree, Lauren is a very pretty girl. Now I would like to know the secrets of her skin (apart from youth).

My first grown-up fragrance was Ysatis by Givenchy

I thought it was a pretty good video too

NB - I didn't comment on her looks, it was the disgusted facial expression that I thought was a a bit of a weird choice.
I think way back in one of the threads LO was described as SH's less pretty assistant. I was actually thinking of that rather in direct response to your comment.

Yes, she does this. Mentions relatable/nostaglic stuff (Max Factor Creme Puff, Primark onesie - even though she wouldn't be seen dead in one) adds something quirky (liking stong tea, The Fall, leopard print) with the aspirational (YSL bag, Gucci belt, Botox - oh, she doesn't tend to mention last one , does she?).
It's like a formula.

Earlier in the thread, a contributor mentioned they had seen SH on a discussion panel at Selfridges with Caroline Hirons. That to me is a nightmare scenario - two people I can't stand, in the same place at the same time pontificating on a subject in which neither has any expertise. I am surprised there was enough room in the venue for both of their egos. They seem to have created an exclusive little club for themselves with an on the door policy. Only certain people can join, but they must first agree not to disagree with anything SH and CH say or they will be banished into the wilderness. Or shouty Caroline will shout them down.

That was me - and I'll tell you something else about that event that will reinforce your view...

The panel took to the platform about 15/20 minutes later than the scheduled start time - without any explanation or apology for having kept everyone waiting. I had to be somewhere afterwards so was quite anxious about the delay. I thought it was ill mannered and inconsiderate.

If Sally was a youngster, she would be the one wearing the tshirt of a band she'd never heard of, but who were deemed cool. Her reference to "hanging out with Michael Clark" rings as true as her recommendations about products.

With SH there's always truth mixed in with what sounds like bullshit. I wouldn't discount the M Clarke connection.

I enjoyed the video too. She's likeable in it.
Yes, I think the video about the face mask has got something of the modest, slightly self-mocking, Esther Coren feel about it.

I also welcome it being a negative product review - although I'd welcome it more if it was a negative review of a product from one of the big brands.

When I've seen SH questioned about getting free samples of products, her response is that just as restaurant and film critics don't pay for the meals they eat/films they see so it's unrealistic to expect her to pay for the products she tests. I agree, but restaurant and film critics are just as likely to give negative as positive reviews.

I've never bought SH's explanation for not giving negative product reviews. The explanation I've seen her give is a) she doesn't have much space in her Guardian column and would rather use it to write about products she'd recommend, and b) although a product doesn't suit her it might suit someone else so doesn't want to deter anyone from trying it.

As for (a), I'd have thought warning readers about products that don't deliver would be as good a use of space as recommending products that do. I would, at least, like to see a list at the end of the column of the products in that week's category that she'd tried but didn't find to be as good value as the ones recommended. (Apart from anything else, one can be left wondering whether the three products recommended are in fact the only ones she's tried.)

As for (b), the reverse is just as likely to be true: a product that suits her might not suit someone else. So why recommend anything?
