Old Hollywood gossip & stories

Watched whatever happened to Baby Jane (its on BBC iplayer atm) for the first time last night and I genuinely think Bette Davis gave the best acting performance I have ever seen, I really could not stand her at some points but felt such a deep sadness for what was basically a little girl in a grown woman's body. Joan Crawford was incredible as well, they bounce off each other so well
You would like Feud which is about the making of it with Susan Sarandon as Davis and Jessica Lange as Crawford.

Just came across a podcast called distinct nostalgia. Here is the bio and link.

Exclusive interviews and reunions celebrating some of the biggest names in TV and film. A TV enthusiast’s paradise. There's also special shows and series and a regular Distinct Nostalgia Mind of the Month Quiz. Plus every now and then some original fresh comedy and drama. This is pure entertainment and fun. Enjoy! Definitely ‘more than a podcast’.

There’s a great three part documentary on BBC iPlayer about Elizabeth Taylor and it’s how documentaries should be done (still salty about how terrible the Audrey Hepburn one was).
I wonder if this is her assistant’s room or if it was Elizabeth’s bedroom? Has all her perfumes on the vanity by the looks of it. I love how it’s decorated, the pink slightly horrifyingly dated designs.

Does anyone know what perfume this was? They had some very extreme reactions. Her assistant cried, Paris Jackson coughed and Joan wrinkled her nose and said ‘it ain’t Chanel no.5’.

It’s on Amazon, it’s about £20, I bought one last year 🤢 it is not good. Very strong and heavy granny with a hint of pee, total migraine inducing too

btw thanks for the heads up about the doc. 💖
Yes it seems to have had a love it or hate it effect on the people present!
Her granddaughter didn’t want to spray it, I’m thinking maybe due to the strength haha.

If you get hold of one, you'll have to let us know what it's like!
Will report back! Not sure it’s my cup of tea as I’m fragrantica it says the main accords are woody and I can imagine it’s 80s bombastic (which I wouldn’t expect anything less from Miss Taylor!).
I found some photos of her house and her vanity had quite a bit of Elizabeth Taylor perfumes. She believed in her own products, love it!

That looks like two dressing tables, fascinating stuff! You can just imagine her sitting here, trying on the jewels in a cloud of perfume.

Here’s a few more photos I found - there was a book being made when she was very ill and published after she died of her house called 700 Nimes Road. I think some of these photos are from Architectural Digest too. Enjoy!

I wonder where she got the American flag in the top right of her display cabinet from?

Does anyone know who this is? When she redid her bedroom is powder blue she had this photo next to her bed so it must be someone important. Her brother?

The images are very HD my end but I believe Tattle reduces the size so sorry if some of the detail has been lost!

Think it's the actor Roddy McDowall. Childhood and lifelong friends. Met when they starred as children in one of the Lassie films.

'The quest for Japanese beer' written in the mirror in lipstick 🥰 How wonderfully random.
I do love all that shag pile carpet and pink and powder blue upholstery.

I had some White Diamonds back in the 90s. I literally cannot remember anything about it or if I liked it. I think I saw it in Boots recently - must have a sniff and see if it triggers any memories!

A two female family members of mine adore White Diamonds - literally their signature scent!

I’m really enjoying the documentary, it’s so well put together, even the opening credits (lots of jewels!) 🤩

I bought White Diamond Diamonds and Sapphires last year as I was dying to try one of her range, and I hated it, it smelt awful, I gave it my friend, I love perfume I spend a fortune on it, my favourite is Chanel no5, men seem to love the smell of it, I have the most comments from men asking about it, even the bus driver asked me so he could buy his wife it, also Nina Ricci Ricci Ricci, Lancome LA Vie Est Belle, Tom Fords Black Orchid, Paco Rabanne Olympea are my current favourites.

The book Bette and Joan the Divine Feud is a must read, when they were making Whatever Happened to Baby Jane how they tried to outdo each other, how Joan would wear chainmail under her clothes so when Bette had to lift her from the wheelchair she was too heavy and how Joan was supposed to look deathly ill as she was being starved but wore a ton of make up, I laughed out loud, in fact I'm going to read it again. As a child I used to love reading my grandmas Picture Review annuals, and other books, I loved the glitz and the glamour of Hollywood when stars were stars. I have all the books now.
