Oh Lordy. I’m just reading transcript for Lyn Simpson, from NHS improvement (today).
I think I just assumed Tony Chambers did a runner when he left COCH. Maybe that’s just my lack of understanding how NHS works.
But it turns out Sir Duncan Nichol contacted NHS improvement because the paediatricians were going to do a vote of no confidence in Tony Chambers. And he wanted Tony to be moved on. Lyn basically told Sir Duncan to prevent the paediatricians from doing the vote (she says because it would cause patients anxiety
).
Essentially it looks entirely like damage control for the nhs. Keep TC in a job. She knew ‘loosely’ there was a police investigation in neonatal unit but didn’t make the connection that the paediatricians vote of no confidence was related. Give me a break. She’s really senior so had autonomy to ask questions and decide if this was appropriate. But her focus was to prevent the vote, move TC.
She wrote ‘prevent’ more than once in her notes at the time and she’s backtracking saying she didn’t mean that.

And they continue to debate the meaning of the word ‘prevent’ vs ‘stop’
