People have regional accents but lose them either though education or to refine themselves.

Judi is on a panel to discuss serious issues, she should do better.

“So much people do better “ 😂
It doesn’t matter to me so long as they get the point across in an easily understood way which Judi does. I, for one, don’t want to go back to the days when anybody with a regional accent wasn’t welcome on TV

I do agree that we need to reclaim the honour in received pronunciation. Sophie Morgan is obviously of an upper class background, so I am not sure why she has to make her accent more working class. Her mother speaks perfectly. I grew up in a low income household and I have taught myself to speak with received pronunciation. When I visit London, I speak with the cream of society and they have no idea that my background is any different to theirs. It is a sign of respect to make the effort to speak properly.

But who decides what is proper?

There is no harm in trying to pronounce words properly. She really has no excuse. Why dumb yourself down to hoodrat level?

Hard to convey it through the medium of text but I think the way Prunella Scales speaks is proper.
For goodness sake, it’s not 1950, there is nothing wrong with regional voices so long as they’re easily understood and I don’t want lots of people putting on fake accents just to keep a minority happy. We’ve moved on from everybody having to sound like the old queen.

Jill Dando was born in Somerset and spent most of her life there, but she didn't speak as though she'd just got back from ploughing the fields on her combine 'arrrvesterr.

Yes, but who decided it was proper?
It's the way of speaking which elocution coaches teach. And the way people like Jo Good were taught to speak in school.

Ruth Langsford said she was also taught to speak that way.

Yes, but language moves on all the time. The way the Queen ended up speaking was nothing like her younger version. It’s a construct that someone decided that was the right way to speak. But there is no right or wrong way, it’s just snobbery. And what you are talking about is received pronunciation.

The way judy chooses to construct her sentences is a sort of slang, her own slang. She has a platform and she can be herself without resorting to such terrible sentences.

It comes across badly. I don’t think it should be celebrated. Why does she want to showcase illiteracy and laziness at school?

Agreed, I don't think (for me anyway) it is an accent thing, listening to radio etc from the 1950s is bizarre for how Saemy" the accents are but what annoys me is people using bad/incorrect grammar "you was" etc... it seems that (as I have mentioned about my job) people don't know what is correct in a formal vs informal setting

sorry how is this "her own slang"? when probably half of London speak like this? I think ( and I say this as a white person) Judi, whose language is NOWHERE near the awful level of Linda's, has received a lot more criticism than Linda's ever has ( and that is before we get on to the fact that at least Judi has informed intelligent opinions...)

Linda has been called out many times for her awful language.

Judi has a lot more going for her which is why it’s frustrating that she talks like this.

“So much people”

Is not acceptable whatever the reason.
