Love Tony Gates too. His story was so well done, just watching how he became more and more corrupt through small, seemingly minor actions which escalated, like failing to declare the free lunch, agreeing to help Jackie when he thought she'd only hit a dog with her car. I just love his character and story and to me that's why I felt Jo's character and motivations weren't developed enough or at all, really.
Another Tony Gates fan here. I always felt the character would have been excellent in obvs a police drama with him as the main role. All the interactions he would have with cops and villains etc.

I re-watched all of LOD last year and I remember seeing that in S1 ep1 Lennie James was billed first in the opening credits. Seemed like he was the ‘name’ to draw people in to watch.

I'm watching all the series again and it's clear why Tony Gates and Lindsay Denton became bent. Both were dedicated coppers who loved their job but were drawn into crime by family circumstances; Tony wanted to do the best for his daughters and Lindsay to give her mother the care she needed. Both ultimately came good, as did John Corbett. Roz Huntley was driven by ambition and didn't have any links to organised crime.
But what was Jo's motivation, apart from fear? Did she join the police because she wanted to or, like Ryan, as the pawn of an OCG. So her real and pretend fathers were villains. What was the threat that stopped her chucking it in and disappearing? I feel that, as a major character, she was poorly drawn. Perhaps I should watch Series 6 again and it will all become clear!

Exactly, her Mum was gone so where was the threat? If she was utterly under OCG’s control then how did she manage to operate as a police officer and why continue after Tommy had died and the other guy was senile?

Like a fine wine, WWW gets better with age 🥰

.... I felt that some of the stuff in series 6 was a bit parody-ish. Like JM was reading these fan threads and taking notes of every cliche that we laugh about - like the Ted-isms - and then had completely overdone them like an in-joke ....

That's exactly what I felt throughout the series. Mate.

Homeland on Netflix (and C4) is bloody amazing tv - heart pounding stuff. It went a bit squiff in series 3 I think it was, but someone told me to stick with it and it picked up again.
Similar to LOD, but CIA in America - spies etc. There are twists, turns, shocks and surprises - series 8 last year was the last one ever - I was gutted!

Oh that's good to know. I watched series 1 when it first came out and don't think I even got to the end but I've recently re-watched it and gone on to series 2 and really enjoyed both. I'd heard that it goes a bit "squiff" and then improves again but didn't know when. I'll git my teeth if necessary to get through series 3.

My interpretation was that they were trying to imply that at least Fairbank did to her what she’d been told he’d done to her mother (minus pregnancy presumably). She looked very specifically at Kate when she said that she’d been made to fear him and we know from previous seasons and her conception what both he and Tommy are capable of.

I can’t see any other reason why they brought in the grim incest implication other than to imply that, just being his niece would have been enough for the rest of it.

She’d have stayed in after Tommy because she’d seen so many others be killed and even Tommy. Her Cottan statement to Ted in her interview explains why she wouldn’t have trusted AC12, too.
