What I can’t understand is, if he is as awful as people say then how would Ruth Jones be good friends with him. She seems very genuine and a lovely person, I can imagine her telling him to rein it in. Same goes for Freddie, he doesn’t seem to put up with bullshit or fakes.

I am a huge G&S fan so I may have rose tinted glasses on.

Maybe he has a professional persona and a friend persona. People can behave differently in different settings.

I understand that. But, I recently watched the making behind their Christmas special and they both openly admitted that he became too arrogant and she had a word with him. Also, I’d imagine when they are script writing it would be their natural personas as opposed to professional ones.

No, he wouldn’t be tolerable even if he had just one 10 minute TV slot a week on Sunday at 3am.

Apparently Rob Brydon took him to one side and told him to stop acting like a Cnut.

I know they share writing credits but I always thought that Ruth would have had more input than him. Somehow I don't think it was 50/50. Probably more like 90/10.
 
I don't know about his private persona; but he seems to me to be a very talented actor, as demonstrated, for example, by his performance in Into the Woods plus his acclaimed stage performance in One Man, Two Guvnors. As for his script writing, inventing that he only wrote 10% of Gavin and Stacey may help to confirm your view of him as talentless; but it doesn't make it true. Only he and Ruth Jones would know the truth about that.
