I still mourn the accidentally lurid pink North Face jacket I had for years and years. Navy quilted inner jacket and Very Extremely Fuchsia Pink waterproof outer shell, massive pockets, adjustable hood with a peak and no fluffy bits. Bought it in the fag end of the Cotswold sale so it was about 50p reduced from £250, I thought I was buying navy blue with pink accents, couldn't be arsed to send it back when I realised I'd actually bought Very Pink with navy accents. I took comfort in the fact that if I ever needed to call Mountain Rescue I'd be able to say "you're looking for a bright pink blob."

Unfortunately the outer shell got a rip in the sleeve that was beyond even my skills to repair and I now have a really boring black one.

KH and guest really aren’t all that dissimilar imo, I get the feeling that was probably very obvious to all those involved in the case. “My enemy’s enemy is a silly, stupid twit and so is my client” kinda vibes.

They’re both driven by ego and external validation and will go to pretty much any means to get it, even if that means sacrificing the needs of their own children. I’m not sure if you got either alone in a room they’d be able to tell you what their core beliefs or values are, because everything they do and say is shaped entirely by what they believe is going to get them the most attention.

Losing to guest must have been a devastating knock to the ego - one that she absolutely could have avoided if she just got over herself, gritted her teeth and apologised. But she was never going to apologise to someone like Jack once she caught wind of who she was and how much of a bleeping idiot she (Jack) is.

Where KH and guest are perhaps different from each other is that KH had enough self-awareness to know that the whole thing was just so embarrassing. No way was she going to make a fuss publicly and draw attention to it all. Jack, on the other hand, as we have seen so many times before and since, could hardly contain herself.

I’m not sure what my point is other than there is something quite kismet about it all that I do very much enjoy. The fact that KH really did hamstring herself so that an idiot like Jack could so easily ‘take her down’, as well as Jack having absolutely zero self-awareness that all her flaws are actually flaws and will be seen and picked apart as such in public proceedings. I dunno, it all played out exactly how it was supposed imo. The case laid bare just how awful they both are and could have been a huge learning opportunity for them both, a proper ‘death of the ego’ moment. Alas, we are where we are.

The only thing that makes it not so enjoyable is that, as always, there are going to be innocent parties harmed in these things, and they tend to be the children of the dickheads involved. And the fact that Jack’s lawyers never got paid.

If writing books made her no money, why was she keeping on signing contracts for labour intensive work that is unrewarding. I know every writer has to learn at some point that books are inherently unprofitable but if it was so tit why are you signing on for a FIFTH time?

Look for a different way to market the skills that put you in demand!

Edit: As to being unable to pay a gas bill as a successful freelancer due to not getting paid on time... there is insurance for this.

For once, Jack’s not lying. KH entered an IVA and made agreements with her creditors from the case (and elsewhere) so she could avoid bankruptcy. It’s all over the press at the time.
