Wigan Pier is by George Orwell - it's a seminal book on poverty in the UK, a landmark book and a classic, from the 30s. You could argue it's pretty offensive to compare his book to Jack's self-serving fantasies and pretend poverty in a blog.

"Are you aware of my work, Barbara"? What work is that exactly? What on earth does JM do all day, every day of the week? She seems to spend a lot of time convincing herself that she is a hive of industry? She is so lacking in self awareness not to realise how pretentious she sounded when she referred to 'my work' like it is the collected works of Shakespeare.

She cannot cook to save herself. I can't see what is stopping her getting a conventional job because her son isn't exactly a toddler. I get the feeling that she wants to be in showbusiness, but the only problem is that she has no discernible talent. She would like to be in with the showbusiness set and hang around the Groucho or Chelsea Arts Club. Doing a regular job like the rest of us to pay her bills would require her to get out of bed and conform.
