Re: benefits, I think there are cultural and generational issues at play in the UK also. It seems to me that a lot of people would genuinely go without something themselves before they would watch someone else getting something they perceive to be for free. And it's not necessarily to do with media demonisation either, my grandmother has been dead since the late 80s, way before that 'shirkers and scroungers' rhetoric was mainstream. Yet she frequently complained about her younger neighbours who "neither work nor want", whilst bemoaning the fact that she and my grandfather worked their whole lives. It's true that they did, but they were also beneficiaries of plentiful social housing, jobs for life and unions that actually made strides for the working classes then - my grandfather could count on time and a half or double-time overtime frequently, for example. Same with my dad. Whereas later generations had neither of these things. It seems like it was a real point of pride for the working classes up to a certain time, probably mid-late 80s, that you didn't accept handouts. But with the Invalidity Benefit and later Incapacity Benefit, which were relatively easy to get, a lot of people started thinking that duck it, they weren't going to kill themselves working when they didn't have to, and it's hard to blame them. It is also easy to see why people get annoyed though. I have seen people who are genuinely, extremely ill (such as a good friend, recently diagnosed with MS who is already barely able to walk) having to fight for a penny. I have also known more than a few people with conditions that only affect them badly for a few days every 6 months or so. And they are getting support group ESA and full-rate PIP and were able to access these with very few problems, probably because they know how the system is designed and how to get around it. Ironically, most of the people I know who fit this category are very middle-class and this may be because they have that innate confidence and ability to advocate for themselves. It's a sticky one and I don't judge anyone for feeling any kind of way about it tbh.
