she’s really bleeping with the entire AA ethos here. The 12th step of recovery is all about helping other alcoholics. You do that by talking about the (many) benefits of recovery. Not about moaning about how horrible it is without the wider context of the benefits of recovery. Damaging stuff.
Don't get me wrong it makes me happy that so many people are so keen to be part of the country I am from, but I am proud of my own heritage so much so, I dont want to be another one. Why can't people embrace "who they are" not everybody has to be the amazing individual person. Sometimes "normal" is just fine
Well similar, my granddad came to Salford looking for work. My mother has more of an affinity, but even she doesn't call it home. I have never even been to Ireland. To call it a Motherland is beyond laughable.
She is 1/4 Greek (unless her grandmother was Greek as well) by saying it is her Motherland, she is denying her other 3/4 heritage. Her Mother is Irish, so she is 50% Irish, therefore she is more Irish than Greek. Ergo her Motherland is Ireland.
I just want to say that I feel terrible, and like I have dissed bigger feet I just meant that the perspective was a bit weird on the picture, with the ducks in the distance. I am not a "foot sizeist"
I’d imagine that there was some animosity within her family when she changed her name. This is from 2012 so probably not that long after she changed it (but could have been as much as a couple of years?) & her father is still referring to her as Melissa (with Jack in brackets) publicly. Her dad clearly very much identifies himself as Greek Cypriot & her brother is called Yannis so they clearly were very keen on keeping the Greek roots alive. I’d imagine her family won’t have been too pleased when she not only chose a different first name but also shed the family name.
I hope “her sponsor” suggests amends for that ghastly guardian article, she didn’t seem to want to answer any of my questions on it when she came round here did she. Wonder why!
In fact, when she did her tattle AMA (lol) she specifically said that she 'had' to out herself as being in AA on here in order to talk about it, as though we'd forced her and she'd never spoken about it before!

I'm going to sound mean (again) but I'm not sure I feel sorry for her mum: I think the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree, there.
I have so rarely seen a post from her that wasn't an attempt to incite pity - now where have we seen that before?
She isn't in the public eye so much, nor pleading perpetual poverty, so as kind-hearted humans we're inclined to feel sympathy. However, I'm of the opinion that Jack has seen that her mum got extra attention from her dad when ill, and saw this as an effective tactic in her public life.
I'm sure both of them have life-affecting conditions, but I know plenty of people who do and they don't bleat on about it constantly. Two peas in a pod, as far as I'm concerned.
Oh god, she's becoming the Southend version of those Irish-Americans who come to the "old country" to search for their roots and wish you a happy St Patty's Day...
Yes! I worked in the US for a bit after my first period in Scotland and it was quite funny how some Americans with Scottish heritage wanted to connect with me over that when they are such different things (the romanticised heritage and the everyday life in a country nowadays).
I find it less grinding though when people do it all the time than when it's tried on for a week.
I also don't want to judge too harshly on white Americans who identify with their ancestors' Euro-origins. My dad traced our family tree for quite a few centuries (back to 1670) and it's all just peasants and farmers for 100s years not moving from a 30km radius (reader, there were quite some links between my mum's lineage and my dad's...). So I've never had to question my origins as it was never complex. Leaving my country was always my own choice, not decided by parents.
Having said that, being a 32-old woman reminiscing lemon picking in a country your dad didn't even grow up in is just dumb.
As for the teenage-like Taylor Swift posts and why they're grating.
I once read Patti Smith saying something about how teenagers can react so strong to music and bands. And she said how at that age you might not have much life experience yet, but you have already so much feelings to process. So lyrics about things you've not even experienced yet still resonate with those feelings. When you're older you have more experience to process new events, and just more thinks going on in life anyway. This is why obsessions with bands and music (like overidentifying with them, not just liking them) is more tolerable from teenagers than from a 32-old.
(Patti Smith undoubtedly was more eloquent in her explanation).

OT, apologies but my first avatar was Chuck, Morgan and Lester. Second Yvonne Strahovski (AKA Sarah Walker). Am I alone in loving Chuck (all 5 series currently available on Amazon Prime)? Not gritty or edgy but a fun combination of action, comedy, drama and romance. Always 'on the bubble' but got to five series. I also have a girl crush on Yvonne (she has also been in The Handmaids Tail). Zachary Levi (Chuck) has recently raised his profile as DC's Shazam!
Why does her language around food set off red flags for me? I don't have much experience of EDs in the sense of denying oneself food, more the opposite - have worked with a few people that ate to excess, sneaking foods, eating inappropriate foods etc. But the greedy/scoffing/snaffling/wolfing down/food coma type of terminology sometimes feels to me like someone protesting too much? Or am I reading too much into that?
No, I make you right, she is triggering and I think deliberately so (just an opinion m'lud)
SPOILER ED (the 3 dots aren't working for some reason!)
I had issues with food up until my 30s (when I started therapy) My mother is a narcissist and just pure evil. My NM hates overweight people. I mean HATES them. When I was a kid she would put me on diets and basically starve me. I'm tall and broad shouldered (old fashioned term would be 'big boned) She used to go off on manic rages and her face would contort with venom and she'd scream in my face for what seemed like hours, spitting with rage. Like all NMs, a child is just an extension of themselves and because she considered me fat, she would blame me for making her look bad.
Of course i wasn't fat, if anything i was malnourished. Probably also why i didn't get my periods until I was older. My meals were also smaller than my brother's and she used to love making fun of me at the dinner table.
As a result i used to steal and hoard food. I actually used to stuff myself until i was sick.
When people (in this case JM) make light of things like this it is extremely upsetting and my ptsd is triggered.
I am getting better and learning to deal with my ptsd and i no longer have food issues. I genuinely love cooking and feeding people. I'm not a great cook, but what i cook is 100% done with love. As many have said before, JM does not like food. Or cooking. Or feeding people. It is actually uncomfortable to read one of her 'recipes'. That's why i think yesterday's greek offerings were HILARIOUS. It looked nice! It looked like some effort had been made!! You don't have to be sn expert to see its been bought from a shop. No handmade falafels/dolmades are that uniform in shape ffs!!
Sorry for the essay Fraus. My normal snippy posts will return momentarily...
Omg I’ve been meaning to ask you this because I’ve picked up ~vibes from your posts before - south London?
Also Irish and agree with everything said here, it’s very... peak white entitlement the way a lot of people mask wear. BAME people don’t have the privilege of being able to do that so suffer systemic injustices associated with being XYZ, it’d be obscene for JM to adopt yet another new identity to get paying work as part of the new world order, thus depriving someone who’s actually had to work against the grain. But she doesn’t care she needs money to spend!
I’m delighted that loads of you love DMs as much as I do, I live in mine unless it’s 100 degrees. Nobody in my area wears them, so I always feel a bit, how shall we say, Maverick?
That much is true.
Even then I knew I'd find a much better place, either with or without you...............Edinburgh, Cyprus, Greek Isles, Ireland, anywhere but Southend.
Yes. It reminds me of the noise people make when they're constipated and trying to empty themselves out - there's a lovely mental image for you all.
