J. K. Rowling #8 The TRAs squalling

Wow, a BBC page promoting JKR... It's specifically BBC Guernsey though, but still!

I have watched episode 2 of Ink Black Heart and I felt it was better than episode 1. But I did laugh when all of a sudden Charlotte mentioned Madeline and I realised they had to quickly introduce a bit of backstory about the girlfriend and Charlotte's time in the psych ward, presumably as that stuff was less important to the case. With 2 episodes to go I do wonder how they are going to fit it all in. Hopefully I will have time to watch the rest this weekend.
It was a very complex book - I'm surprised it could be condensed into 4 hours. I haven't watched it yet as I haven't had the time, but I remember the book.

I was glad that Madeleine didn't feature in the TV show. She was a pain in the arse (like Charlotte).

They both were, but Strike chose them. I felt a bit bad for Lorelei and Maddy; they were obviously giving it their all because they liked him and saw a chance that they didn't want to lose, and Strike was really just in it for the company, sex and home cooking. Not that he didn't like them, just that for him it was never more than that and then he lost it a bit when they quite reasonably wanted it to progress if it was going to carry on (although Maddy should have had more self control). His work wasn't compatible with the relationship she wanted.

I think he's deliberately gone for women he knows there's no real long term future in because up until now he's been a commitment phobe and wedded to the job (which I guess a private detective has to be). But as he said to Charlotte after she died, he's ready now and wants a good person. And Robin deserves to be properly romantically loved. I think Murphy does love her but she doesn't really love him...maybe she is being a bit unfair too.

I didn't like Madeline in the books, she was very annoying and overly key-up from the start, I wasn't sad to see her go. Lorelei deserved better, but she also in the end well into the trap of never being more important than the job and Robin. Since I haven't seen the TV adaptation of IBH not sure how much is missing from Madeline not being there - Lorelei nursing him and ultimately being ditched shortly after was pretty much left out. But both women were quite necessary in Strike's development to understanding that he needs to change to be with Robin.

Mind working overtime
