J. K. Rowling #8 The TRAs squalling

Just after finishing ep1 . In general its very good and I dont feel like it's missing an obscene amount of detail. I had forgotten how much I ❤❤❤ holliday grainger as Robin.

I'm sad that they moved Robin and Ilsa's dinner at Bob Bob Ricard to her apartment viewing. That scene had particularly clunky exposition.

I have watched episode 1 and liked it. Am glad to see Pat, and I like Midge. I'm not glad to see Murphy but he seems to be well cast from what description I remember.

I'm watching it with my husband who has only seen the tv series and he won't read the books as he's not really a fiction reader.

I am concerned about only having 3 episodes left and sooooo much investigation to fit in. This week is busy for me so we might not finish all the episodes this week but it is nice to see Robin and Strike again.

Poor Strike, on the ground!

The Guardian seems to be doing a hit piece.

Strike: The Ink Black Heart review – it’s hard to see why the TV version of this self-indulgent novel exists https://www.12ft.io/https://www.12f...-heart-holliday-grainger-tom-burke-review-bbc

How dare they say this, though:

'As a work of crime fiction, the TV version of Strike is several removes from having a compelling reason to exist. It is based on a series of hit novels – fine, nearly all detective dramas are – but these books aren’t especially well regarded. They surely attract as many sales and comment pieces as they do only because their author created Harry Potter'

No you barstools, I love the Strike books because they are works of art and are intriguing and suck you onto their world. I read the last book barely taking proper breaths because I was so engrossed.

But I suppose the Guardian hates Jo anyway so this is them sticking the knife in.

I can understand how some would say the show isn't amazing, but to say people only read the books because of Harry Potter is a lie.

Has anyone seen the Guardian review. They can't help themselves can they?

The sooner the Grauniad descends into the abyss and goes bankrupt the better as far as I'm concerned.
What a cheek they have saying that 'these books aren't especially well regarded'.
bleeping twats.

I watched 3 episodes last night and really enjoyed it. As expected they have trimmed the online chat content and cut some of the extraneous characters but it's still working for me and i think its a good adaptation. I'll watch the last episode tonight.

I love seeing the real London and so many of the locations that I know really well. Tom Burke and Holiday Grainger are excellent in their roles and I also like the casting of Pat and Barclay. Pez and Wally are pretty much like I imagined them too.

I think they could have made it longer by having 5 or 6 episodes to explain a few things better to those who haven't read the book but this is still good quality entertainment compared to much that is on offer at the moment.

Guardian just couldn't resist could they. It's so pretty.

People arent buying these books in their droves because they are curious what the author of HP has produced. They are buying them because they are some of the best detective novels ever written

I read other crime fiction , and nothing comes close in terms of the immersive world that she has set the series in , the character development, the complex twisting cases and the sheer heart pounding drama.

Tana French's Dublin murders might be more stylish in literary terms, but they can't lay a glove on JK in the areas I mentioned above

Ive only watched the first episode, but Im loving it....

Just seen the Guardian article!!!!! What rubbish they are spouting. The books are well regarded, and I think the case they are investigating is fascinating. Its about online bullying, isnt that a massive issue at the moment?
Its about the influence of the far right on online influencers..... again isnt this a massive issue at the moment?
Its got a disabled veteran character, with issues...again surely this is a massive issue/talking point at the moment.

All wrapped up in a quirky off beat detective story.

And I love the house theyve chosen for the art collective...it looks amazing.

What a rubbish article! Guess they have some uberwoke journalist on their payroll.
Funnily enough, when the very first Strike landed and it was still a secret that it was really JKR behind it, many critics were falling over themselves on how good this book, especially from a newcomer was, to the point that they started suspecting that it must be someone behind a pseudonym, it simply was too good of a first novel. Well guess what. It's good because it is from a respected and established writer, one of the most successful ones in the world.
And: most of the twats don't even know that it's JKR behind Strike, all the moaning only ever happens really associated with Harry potter. I've half an idea of sending the Guardian a piece of my mind.

Oh yes, the Pez guy gave me a massive ick, so they got him spot on.

Also, when Robin is upset when she realises Edie did need help but it was too late, and that she had turned her away, that broke my heart. Holliday does a really good job of showing Robin's turmoil over that

It certainly is a lie!

I can't be arsed at all with Harry Potter - but I LOVE Strike! I put off reading the Strike books for years because I didn't like HP, but then was in the situation where the back of a sauce bottle would have provided entertainment, so I reached for the first one (pure chance that it was the first one handy) and I was HOOKED! Bought the lot. I don't tend to re-read fiction, so when I'd finished them I passed them to a good friend, and she read them and is keeping them because she does re-read them.

They are an entirely different style as well as different genre, and they are BRILLIANT! (And I'm still not struck on Harry Potter)

Just read The Guardian's sneering review. I have to say, as someone who greatly admires Rowling's writing on feminism and her witty online presence, but never liked her fiction, that the review does make some technical points about the show that I would agree with - but they are still a matter of taste and it is obvious that the reviewer is guided by a dislike of Rowling instead.

I was kinda hoping for a Grauniad review along the lines of this classic handwringer, in which the writer really can't stand the fact that she likes Róisín Murphy's album when Murphy said some sensible things about children and puberty blockers. It's hilarious, except for the lying statistics, and made me enjoy the album even more.

Wow, a BBC page promoting JKR... It's specifically BBC Guernsey though, but still!

I have watched episode 2 of Ink Black Heart and I felt it was better than episode 1. But I did laugh when all of a sudden Charlotte mentioned Madeline and I realised they had to quickly introduce a bit of backstory about the girlfriend and Charlotte's time in the psych ward, presumably as that stuff was less important to the case. With 2 episodes to go I do wonder how they are going to fit it all in. Hopefully I will have time to watch the rest this weekend.
