Great British Bake Off 2023

Well I missed the final as I was away overnight.
I accidentally saw who’d won it when browsing for news this morning and I can’t really be bothered to watch it now.
Good luck to Matty, I didn’t mind who won.
I still can’t decide whether I’m just a bit bored with the programme itself, or if the bakers this year were just a bit average.
I don’t think they are average as such, more previous contestants where far far better. If you told me this was series one I would have believed you.

Pleased Matty won and Dan is still the smuggest of twats but I was so confused during the where are they now bit at the end. Who the duck is Keith? I swear I’ve never seen him before in my life 😂
My mum and I always message while we’re watching Bake Off and we both said the same about Keith! I have a good memory for names and faces but seriously ZERO memory of him at all 😂

They've made it more realistic for bakers in general. The stuff they are making now is stuff to a level a good home baker could achieve without crazy ingredients and specially made gadgets etc. It was getting to Heston Blumenthal territory at times or very niche styles like Kim Joy. I think they'll settle down next series to this new level. I do agree it's not as exciting but still half the stuff was still very technically hard to get right. They unfortunately knocked out the bakers with more fun personalities earlier.

I grow to dislike Paul Hollywood more and more. Pru is not far behind either.
He was unnecessarily unpleasant to Josh about his cake. It’s fine to critique the flavour and the bake, but their show stopper was supposed to be based on an elevated version of their first ever bake. He could have said that he felt Josh had delivered more exciting flavours in other rounds, the boring comment was not needed.

It’s clear PH will cling onto GBBO until the death because without it he doesn’t have a TV career. He’s just not likeable enough to front other programmes as they’ve all bombed. He has such an inflated sense of his own worth I imagine he’s difficult to work with. And a total walking cliche - as soon as he gets a bit of fame he ditches his wife of 15 years for a younger model 🙄

I am only coming in on this thread at the end. Gutted for Josh he was the best during the season but fair is fair Matty deserved it based on the final.

I just want to say a word about Alison Hammond. I was very skeptical of her at the start, and thought she was too loud and try hard. But I have to say I warmed to her as the season went on. She didn't try to be funny. She was just warm, friendly, liked a bit of a laugh and was generally a nice presence. The best thing I can say is that she was completely unpretentious, which is really nice in a show like this.

Yes have to agree about Alison on this show, hopefully this may be her cue to tone it down generally.

I couldn’t agree more, so relaxed and friendly. Paul Hollywood is just a jerk, sometimes very rude when there is no need to be. Plus he stands with his hands in his pockets which is okay in the pub with your mates, but when he does it in bake off , it’s as if he can’t be arsed making an effort. Is there anyone else who gets annoyed when he keeps crumbing the cakes as if he is trying to mash a banana for a baby. Come on man, you are hardly a leading light in the entertainment world, merely a one trick pony who could be axed and wouldn’t find any other programme who would want you. And I’m not looking at your supposedly legendary blue eyes, I am too busy looking at your middle age spread. As for the Hollywood handshake, I’d tell him where to shove it. Can you guess he is not my favourite ? The most I can say about Prue is she is okay, when she is not dressed as the marquee at the circus

Or he’s always sticking his fingers in the cakes too. He’s a bread maker, he’s not known for his cakes. Prue is a Cordon Bleu trained chef, has had a Michelin Star restaurant, founded several cookery schools - yet the show acts like Paul is the superior baker and judge?
He does annoy me so much because you can just smell the arrogance and cheap aftershave through the TV.

Not baking related but Prue also has a hand in the company pasta evangelists ( yummy but expensive pasta)

Neither of them are actually known for making cakes. I think Prue has said that she's actually not much of a baker and is obviously a chef instead. Paul is known for baking bread- that's why it made sense to pair him with Mary Berry who provided the cake element. And no one likes Paul anyway so why not replace the pair of them?

What a bloody week, only caught up and managed to avoid a spoiler. So pleased for Matty, he was actually very sweet how much he loves his partner. His cakes looked great inside! And the decorating was good bar the lean.
For me he is suited for appearing on small segments, like this morning or Sunday brunch type shows. Allison made it obvious he was her favourite.

Would you have ever guessed this is Noel?

I think Noel and Alison worked surprisingly really really well together. There were loads of moments that I thought that they showed they actually really got on, and it's nice to watch that as a viewer.

Like one of the later weeks where Alison ended a tough showstopper with a clap for the bakers and told them she was proud of them, and Noel looks across the silent tense room and goes '....No one's coming in on that clap, are they?' and both cracked up wheezing 😂
