Giles Coren #2 Children of the Coren RIP Dawn Foster.

How do you know all this? I’ve never even heard of Floxxie or Flossie Walker. She is very beautiful. She reminds me of a character from a period TV show called The Camomile Lawn, which was based on a series of books by Mary Wesley. Her husband looks more like 30 or 40 years older than her, and well past 60. I thought Sadiq Khan was the Mayor of London.

She is incredibly beautiful (has modelled, sat nude for Jonny Yeo - who is another nepobaby and a contemporary of Giles’ at Westminster) and actually very bright - but never really had a solid career path. She is a bit of a free spirit so it wasn’t particularly surprising to me that she made a somewhat unorthodox choice in her second husband.

Love these little titbits about Esther's sister. Sounds like she struggled to hold down a job and that's why at 35 she made the choice to marry a much older and very rich man.

I still don’t really understand what the Lord Mayor is or does and I think Floxxie’s husband looks more like her grandfather. I was trying to find examples of couples with big age differences and Dominic West was nearly 20 years older than Lily James when they had an affair, and they are now both 55 and 35, which is the same age as Floxxie and the Lord Mayor. Yet Dominic doesn’t look like Lily’s grandfather.

I went to school with Armstrong followed by university with Sitwell (first one a delight, second one wouldn’t piss on him if on fire) now someone has mentioned Dominic West who lives round the corner from me!

Hoping that’s the only people on this thread I bump into in real life, the thought of Coren’s goblin face feels me with fear!

I think the Lord Mayor is largely a ceremonial position which has to be bought with a shitload of money. Hence only very wealthy people ever doing it. I think they host fancy dinners and the like and live in the Mansion House.

Any good stories? 🙂

That doesn’t surprise me about Sitwell by the way, he always comes across as a pompous hole.

I can only imagine the conversations around the well connected dinner tables when little Jonny Jobless needs to pull his finger out & stop smoking weed “well darling you’ve always loved eating out in restaurants, why not make a career out of it?”…followed by peals of laughter & much congratulatory back slapping as daddy puts in a call.

You only need look at instagram to see that food (opening restaurants, reviews, small boutiques) are the posh baby career of choice (used to be wine, theatre etc)

Generational wealth can't see the inherent embarrassment of being a nepo baby, it is just the normal and right order of things.

You're not supposed to understand what the Lord Mayor is or does. That's the point of it. Remember what Queen Elizabeth said to Paul Burrell:

"there are powers at work in this country of which we have no knowledge."

Absolutely.
And in the UK at least, it’s ingrained in us and starts at the very top.
Hence us plebs carrying on the tradition of bowing and deferring to the sons and daughters of the sons and daughters who, centuries ago, convinced us that they were deemed by a deity to be granted wealth beyond measure, and a nice shiny crown 😂

Very true. I just finished watching Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light (absolutely bloody amazing btw) and have we really come so far from influential families having vast amounts of wealth unearned? Most of the Tatler style nepo babies with their estates inherited them as their forebears pleased the monarch of the day and were given titles and (stolen) land.

She also said ‘oh, Paul, you’re so wise. I wish I’d married you and not Philip’.

The Lord Mayor is a ceremonial role in the City of London. He’s basically a business rep. It comes from the time the Mayor more or less ran the city as he represented the Guilds - the various trades that made up the city’s economy. Dick Whittington etc. It’s a historical thing but nowadays the Lord Mayor heads up the City of London Corporation which is the local authority for the City. He’s still elected by the Aldermen, who represent the Guilds (now known in the City as Livery Companies).
