Gavin and Stacey

What I don't get is why Doris left them the house when she had a daughter? Wasn't her name Alison and she was the same age as Gwen?

I thought that the 2019 special was awful. The writing was really poor. They didn't really have anything else to say about the characters and it showed with the poor script and the way they struggled for filler.

There is no way Nessa would be that desperate for Smithy. It's ruined her character and made her a bit pathetic. I think with her proposing at the end of that special, they had planned to make another part a hell of a lot sooner, possibly the year after but it never happened.

James Corden and Ruth have aged really well, the others not so much so it really throws it off balance when they are stood together. Gavin and Stacey with kids just doesn't work either.
I agree, I hated that she proposed.

Out of interest what did you think was so bad about the 2019 special?
I saw it again recently and didn't think it was as bad as I remembered. Though I hated the Nessa giving taps as gifts thing. It was just so silly.
@ChubClubThug shares a lot of my sentiments.

The example I always use when criticising the writing of the 2019 special is this:

Stacey says "like over there by the bingo hall, that's where you rang me and I ran out into the rain" and Gavin said "oh yeah I think I was at a foam party at the time".

That is such a clunky and unnatural way to write it, when they could have really driven the point about Barry Island being full of their history. I'd have written it like this:

Stacey: Do you remember when I moved back home just before Neil was born? I thought I'd never see you again, I was a mess, sleeping on Uncle Bryn's sofa. But that phone call, I knew then that we were going to be okay, because I love you, baby.
Both: That's just the way it is.

Now, I'm not a professional scriptwriter, and I may be a few pints in right now, nor am I claiming this is too notch writing. What I am saying is that there are PLENTY of naturalistic ways to throw back to previous episodes/events. In that bit I've written, I've thrown back to a specific time in series 2, picked out two events that happened in that series, and made reference to what they said to each other when Gavin found out she was pregnant.

Yes totally agree. That's a great example of how stupid the dialogue is where they just try and pack it all in. I cannot believe they did a read through and thought, yep that'll do! It's awful 😖

Someone’s mentioned it upthread but I cringed watching the 2019 Christmas special yesterday when Mick was explaining to Pam that they always alternate between Christmas in Essex and in Wales. No one talks like that and I can’t remember the dialogue but it was obvious from one line that they alternated, he just went on and on and laboured the point. The audience aren’t stupid!

Right?! The line about Christmas 2017 and Gwen's infested mattress would have sufficed as the audience would have worked out that they alternate!

There also wasn't enough of Pam and Mick's chemistry for my liking

I’m rewatching the entire series in preparation for the Finale. They repeat a lot of the same dialogue in order to make a point. Like in Series 2 when Mick finds the body at his work, Dawn, Pete, Smithy and the neighbour all comment on Mick not being 53/54.

There was a scene I remember in the 2019 special where it felt like Sonia was just a way to remind the audience of the show’s history. In many ways it felt like a recap. The only thing I remember happening that seemed to move the show forward was the proposal and I just don’t think Nessa would ever have did that

I always thought this was clever because it could happen in real life but other tv shows don’t do it.

If someone else enters a room they wouldn’t know something has already been said

I liked that, they also do it with Dawn's stepbrother in the first Christmas special.

Do you know he's been to Nepal three times?

Im watching the 2019 Christmas special now with a Buck’s Fizz and it’s not as bad as I always remember 🤣 it’s obviously a bit cheesy and hammed up but not too bad.

I also don’t see smithy and nessa together, I hope they don’t end up married. They have chemistry but it’s nothing romantic.

I feel a bit sad when I see how old everyone looks.
Doris’ daughter was called Moira
Wasn't it rhe episode where ness said she was keeping the baby and Doris spike about how much her daughter was a mistake and a nasty piece if work?

That’s a good point but it always felt a bit overdone.

Stepbrother John? The one who just writes “From John?”

To be fair we have to have very similar conversations with my mother in law

back in an old job of mine, I made mr kcc write a xmas card to my then friend just signed "from john" and she actually thought it was from a dude in the next door office, even though we talked about g+s all the time!

I also was the instigator of wrapping secret santa presents in foil 😆

The thing with Sonia was so odd. I hunt noticed it before but smithy talks to her in a really posh way in front of dvdryond else but for some reason when it's just them two he doesn't?

To be fair, Stacey isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, and neither is Gavin, so the way they speak is very clunky and true to their characters.
