Can someone who is knowledgeable about the culture answer why every older male is uncle and every older woman is aunty even if they're not blood related?
Is it a respect for the elders thing?
I think in lots of cultures people call people they’re not necessarily related to aunty or uncle, but some South Asians do use it as a sign or respect too. Sometimes my dad will introduce me to his friends saying this is uncle ‘x’ as a way to show that this is someone I should respect and that I shouldn't just call them their first name.
