I think you'd be sad at the missed opportunities you thought you could of had if she was alive out there somewhere. But now that she's dead the slim chance has turned into nothing

I guess Billy always thought that his mum walked out and left him and didn’t care. And so if she ever wanted to see him again, she would have made the first move. And now he knows there is no chance of any reconciliation, it’s final
(I do know someone IRL who was left by their mum and traced her as an adult. Her reaction was ‘why do you want to see me after all this time’. They met up once and never again.)
