I am calling BS. They might have died with both but cannot have been killed of both. It has to be one or the other. It would be like two people getting done for murder but it's only one who does the fatal blow.

They haven't claimed that both variants killed her (or even that she died from covid). The point of the article is that they have found it possible for people to be infected with two different variants at the same time.

Out of general interest, how can they tell by a PCR test which variant you have?

I assume they use PCR tests, if not then please correct me

PCR tests don't usually give information about variants (in a some cases they may indicate a particular variant, but that's not the primary use of a PCR test). They have to sequence the viral RNA to determine the variant, which is why most people won't know which variant they have. So PCR is usually used to amplify the RNA to get enough material for sequencing, but the sequencing is different from a 'PCR test', if that makes any sense at all?

ETA: PCR is essentially just a way to synthesise more genetic material, which is then used in analyses. So for a PCR test the PCR product is run on a gel using a technique called gel electrophoresis.

Pfizer is not doing as good a job as they’d hoped a booster for the vulnerable as a lot of people in that category are being hospitalised

I usually get tonsillitis at least 3-4 times a year (too old to get them removed unless as a last resort now lol). I’ve not had it since January 2020 and can definitely put it down to the masks, but really if people are seriously worried about common illnesses then there’s ways to help yourself build natural immunity like exercising more, stress management and taking vitamins.

Not catching a bug for 18 months isn't down to poorly made, wrongly used homemade face coverings or cheap ones bought in a shop. It's because it's been illegal to mix with loved ones for ages.

Covid deniers wasting NHS time.

Oh boo hoo you’ve got covid and you’re in bed but well enough to tweet so no one cares  let’s all wear masks forever heaven forbid you come into contact with any germs - wouldn’t want you to ever feel slightly under the weather now would we:sick:

I agree whilst I don’t wish sickness on anyone, imagine how ill she could have been if she hadn’t been vaccinated. Frankly the government don’t care if you are bed ill for a few days, as long as you aren’t costing the NHS money.

I do think covid is turning us all into snowflakes when it comes to sickness, probably because there were no flu bugs last winter and everyone has forgotten about general illness/viruses!

It would be interesting to see the proportion of vaccinated/none vaccinated because those older unvaccinated groups are always going to be more vulnerable when it’s circulating in society.

'Really bad symptoms ' is just her personal opinion, it's no indication of anything. People can have ' bad symptoms ' of most things. She hasn't said anything of substance.

I think it would be interesting to see if the end of mask wearing makes any difference to the infection rate . Many people suspect they are fairly useless in the real world .

I doubt my dirty fabric one that is hardly ever washed does much tbh 😬😂

I would say down to increased hand hygiene and a conscious effort to cover a cough / sneeze.

It's something we will never know and be able to compare. Every illness can cause discomfort up to a sort of pain threshold. It's the body fighting that is the important thing.

Just after a little advice please, my 5 year old has come back from her dad's with a temp of 39.1 and a cough. I've ordered a PCR test but is there any particular temp where I'd need to be concerned and possibly need to take her in? I'm so worried for her.

I think it’s 39.5. Sorry to hear little one is unwell. Hope she feels better soon. It’s such a worry when they are unwell. But they are also resilient and bounce back quick. Sending healing.

When mine were younger I was told if it gets to around 40 and doesn't come down with Calpol and ibuprofen then get checked. Hope she's feeling better soon. X
