My 7 year old has a new cough and a low grade temp. So now i have all 3 kids off school. 7yr old booked for a test today at 3pm.

1 week. 1 week we managed back at school.

So sick of living through this now. Fuck off 2020 🙄🙄
It was the exact same here in Scotland when our schools went back in August. One week and everyone was coming down with colds, having to get their kids tested, results taking ages to come through due to high volume and errors on the site for booking tests.

We can't even get tests here  lots on the local rep's page saying their either being directed to Scotland to be tested or can't book in anywhere local .One woman has said she's been trying for 4 days to get her son tested he's got a temp and cough ..

It’s ridiculous. I just feel like the governments should have been more prepared with the push for schools returning. I’m happy my child is able to go to school, absolutely, but they should’ve anticipated this.

💯 even if they use the excuse kids don't get it surely the number of students returning to uni and employees returning to the office would make for way more tests and testing ..it's common sense ..

Kids (and people in general) will now be getting bugs and sniffles because they’ve been in hiding or in small bubbles for half a year, mixing again will throw a lot of people’s immune systems for a loop along with the change in season. Of course schools going back was going to see a rise, along with people returning from abroad and frankly nobody enforcing any kind of quarantines.

That said I think this shows that the COVID safe way of doing things hasn’t been followed strictly and that’s what the government should focus on - there is far less hand washing and social distancing going on. People are out and about every day with different people for the sake of it. Nowhere enforced the rules about only two households gathering etc. British people just don’t like following rules or being told what to do / changing habits, our society just isn’t collaborative and after months of being locked down, people who are generally well and healthy just want to do what they want to do.

A huge huge majority of people are asymptomatic, of those who have symptoms, most are mild, and of the few hospitalisation cases again most aren’t dying. Young people are mixing, being exposed to the virus and testing positive but not dying and that’s what matters. We have the flu every year, in bad years why aren’t we asked to socially distance and wear masks and hand wash to protect the vulnerable? We have a flu jab and thousands still die. I believe people who are extra vulnerable should take extra precautions the same way they might do during a normal flu season but that the rest of the country should be allowed to get back to some level of normality. I believe herd immunity is important and we are some way to getting it but we need to realise this virus might just be something we live with and unfortunately it’s something, like flu, that can kill the vulnerable. It’s terribly sad but it’s a fact of life and one we seemingly manage to ignore every other year. I know people who will still go to work or socialise “oh it’s only a sniffle” and spread germs happily and knowingly with the same potential outcome if you’ve got elderly or vulnerable relatives. My grandparents are miserable, depressed and feel as if they’ve a death sentence hanging over them which is just no way to live because you’re old.

The tests have an astonishingly high percentage of false positive readings (current testing numbers estimate 500-700 a day could be false positive). We are doing targeted testing which also could account for the high positives. As long as deaths stay low (and they’re far lower than cancers, flu, suicide, etc) then let’s get back to normal with a good lashing of sensibility and hygiene Our mainstream media And even government are scaremongering.
I’m so, so over it now. My husband reads the cases etc but for the most part I’m avoiding all coverage of it as much as I can. First time I’ve read this thread for weeks and I feel like my head is going to fall off again!
In my province it is not true about most people being asymptomatic. They have been doing asymptomatic testing for the public and of the thousands done, only 0.4% came back positive. Yet we are having hundreds of new cases a day with symptoms.

I’m sorry but I feel like I need somewhere to get all this emotion out.

My nan is on end of life care. I managed to get Friday off work so I can get on a train (safely) to go visit her about 50 mins away. My sis in law came round yesterday with 2 of her kids. This is because her younger kid finishes school 15 mins later and she did not want to walk home to a 4th floor flat (or up the stairs.) so she brought them to mine instead. I am working from home so I went to make MIL a cup of tea at 3pm like I always do. We have my elderly MIL who is not in the best of health here.
My niece was coughing and saying she feels like she has a fever. They left right away to get her son but whilst I was working again, they came back and spent at least 30 mins here before I noticed. The whole time my niece was coughing without covering her mouth. No hand washing and she didn’t even flush when she went to the toilet. She won’t get her daughter tested because it is just a cold. It might be yes but we don’t know that for certain.
This could have exposed my MIL and me. They certainly weren’t more than 2m apart. As a result, my dad does not want me going to visit my Nan. I am beyond devastated but I understand why. I haven’t seen my parents since my sister’s funeral in March and it breaks my heart I might not say goodbye properly to my nan.
I don’t understand why people just don’t get it. I am furious with SIL and I’ve been crying nonstop. I’ve been WFH since March and I feel extremely lonely. I miss my mum. I miss my dad. I miss my siblings. I honestly can’t handle this anymore.
If your nan is on end of life IF you have been exposed to corona then what difference is it going to make to her?! I’m sorry but she’s dying anyway and if it was me I would go and visit. Wear mask, gloves and don’t touch her. I don’t see an issue personally,

How are people supposed to do that though? It’s hard enough trying to quarantine away from your children under the same roof. My cats can seek me out quicker than the kids (and that’s saying something) 😂

They’re also quite clingy, I’d feel terrible shutting them out. They’d end up depressed.

They have crossed a line if they expect me to stay away from my cat. Fuck that.

There’s still also that risk of spreading it to whoever is looking after nan by being around the caregiver(s) themselves. I doubt OP wouldn’t want to be responsible for that, or even passing the virus to their nan - nobody wants to be that person, end of life or not.

OP could you maybe go get a test now for reassurance to make sure, and still visit nan if negative?

Sorry to be thick but I don't really get it. How is a cat going to spread corona? is the cat going to be coughing along the street and give it to people?
There is no evidence to state that cats can pass it on to humans, but cats do sneeze and get colds just like the rest of us.

I would say wait a few days before going for the test. It can incubate apparently so you might get a negative test but still have it if you have the test too early.

I’m so sorry that is heartbreaking. As mentioned by someone else would it be possible to get a test and then go? I also think you could take many precautions to enable you to be able to see here. I really am sorry and I hope that you will be able to go and visit her. I also think your niece needs to learn to flush toilets and wash her hands afterwards xx

Sorry to be thick but I don't really get it. How is a cat going to spread corona? is the cat going to be coughing along the street and give it to people?
I think there’s a potential for spread if anyone was to stroke the cat for example neighbours. We have a lot of cats around here that come in our garden and are friendly, our neighbours cat used to come in and fall asleep on our sofa. We now will no longer stroke any of them in case someone with covid has stroked them or the slim chance we could have it and take it home to their owner. We still say hello and have a chat though cos we love cats! My husband was very sad he was no longer allowed to stroke them 😄

There is a possibility they can spread it from coughing, I think what they mean is keep yourself away from the animal so they don't catch it from you ..

Thank you to those who replied before the thread closed.

@Unagi - the issue would be that I would get on the underground, a train from St Pancras, then be around my parents and the carers and possible other relatives. It isn't just possibly making my Nan sick. There are many more I could impact. I would not be able to live with myself if I made other people sick or put my Nan through this. I can’t see her through a window or anything along those lines due to where she is right now.

@Buzzbee
I have tried to book a test for walk in and drive in centres. No available slots. I am having a COVID test today as I am part of the ONS study. I can’t avoid that as I committed to this date BUT it does mean I will also have another test next week. My GP told me not to book a drive in centre because that would mean I would take a test away from someone who needs it especially as I have another 2 more weeks in the study.

@birdiefly246 - yes you are right. I know it can take a few days so I don’t want to get a false positive too early. My dad isn’t even comfortable with me having a negative test because he knows it can take a few days.

@Gembo Thank you. I think my husband will drive us on Saturday so she at least knows I am outside. I will have to see what they say if I take gloves, mask etc.

Also as I am due to travel tomorrow, even if I was to have a test today the results might not make it back in time.

they are pretending that if somebody strokes your cat and has covid, that if you then stroke your cat you may catch it. its bullshit in my opinion, cats have their own corona virus, its just scaremongering.

its only if you really have it, my husband and i had a similar illness in november and we didnt stay away from our two cats and they were fine x

You’re right. I had it in April, didn’t seem to pass it on to my cats who barely left my side, they were both fine. More scaremongering from the media, it’s messing with peoples’ heads.
