Kids (and people in general) will now be getting bugs and sniffles because they’ve been in hiding or in small bubbles for half a year, mixing again will throw a lot of people’s immune systems for a loop along with the change in season. Of course schools going back was going to see a rise, along with people returning from abroad and frankly nobody enforcing any kind of quarantines.
That said I think this shows that the COVID safe way of doing things hasn’t been followed strictly and that’s what the government should focus on - there is far less hand washing and social distancing going on. People are out and about every day with different people for the sake of it. Nowhere enforced the rules about only two households gathering etc. British people just don’t like following rules or being told what to do / changing habits, our society just isn’t collaborative and after months of being locked down, people who are generally well and healthy just want to do what they want to do.
A huge huge majority of people are asymptomatic, of those who have symptoms, most are mild, and of the few hospitalisation cases again most aren’t dying. Young people are mixing, being exposed to the virus and testing positive but not dying and that’s what matters. We have the flu every year, in bad years why aren’t we asked to socially distance and wear masks and hand wash to protect the vulnerable? We have a flu jab and thousands still die. I believe people who are extra vulnerable should take extra precautions the same way they might do during a normal flu season but that the rest of the country should be allowed to get back to some level of normality. I believe herd immunity is important and we are some way to getting it but we need to realise this virus might just be something we live with and unfortunately it’s something, like flu, that can kill the vulnerable. It’s terribly sad but it’s a fact of life and one we seemingly manage to ignore every other year. I know people who will still go to work or socialise “oh it’s only a sniffle” and spread germs happily and knowingly with the same potential outcome if you’ve got elderly or vulnerable relatives. My grandparents are miserable, depressed and feel as if they’ve a death sentence hanging over them which is just no way to live because you’re old.
The tests have an astonishingly high percentage of false positive readings (current testing numbers estimate 500-700 a day could be false positive). We are doing targeted testing which also could account for the high positives. As long as deaths stay low (and they’re far lower than cancers, flu, suicide, etc) then let’s get back to normal with a good lashing of sensibility and hygiene Our mainstream media And even government are scaremongering.
I’m so, so over it now. My husband reads the cases etc but for the most part I’m avoiding all coverage of it as much as I can. First time I’ve read this thread for weeks and I feel like my head is going to fall off again!
