I wouldn't be sending my kid to school during the summer holidays

Surely if they opened during the summer it would screw up the terms for next year? Easier to scrap school for the rest of the year and start again in september. It sucks, and it sucks for the poor kids, but it would suck more for them to be stuck in school all summer, likely through to October without much of a break.

My friend received their letter from Boris - does anyone think it’ll have much of an impact? The contents are just a repetition of what we’re being told by the news every day. Older/vulnerable people have received similar letters already. There are adverts outside, on TV and on social media telling us to stay in. Everyone’s talking about it. I don’t think anyone can plead ignorance here. I hope it’ll have an impact but at this point I struggle to believe anyone not already adhering will take it seriously

I wonder if Scotland will get one from the Scottish chief medical officer, posted before her resignation, telling everyone to stay home 😂

My daughter had a piano exam booked for end of March which was cancelled. We have had an email from the exam board saying that any exams that were booked for March and April can be submitted by video. Shes having her weekly lesson by FaceTime.

My daughter is the same! Weekly FaceTime piano lessons and submitting her exam piece by video. Which I’m so grateful for as she has just started this year and if it had all just stopped I think she never would have picked up again. Wonderful that the music teachers are still able to work remotely too. Such a talent to have.

I’m due to have a new boiler and tank fitted end of April, they text last week to say the work was still scheduled to go ahead and they would deliver the supplies next week

me too...Mary berry throw it all in recipe , never disappoints. Didn’t know you could freeze the bananas?! just chuck in the freezer in a bag and then defrost before using?
I've made the Mary Berry one before but my chocolate chips sank to the bottom.

Just been out shopping to see a pregnant woman with her partner shopping as well 😡😡😡😡 What makes things worse this woman is as far as I would of been (had a miscarriage last year). I definitely wouldn’t be out at this time!

I'm third trimester and currently sat in the car while my husband does the shopping. He cant drive so I have to take him and wait. His work actually banned pregnant women from the store before they told all non essential businesses to close.

They are doing bugger all at the moment, they are on an extended holiday right now. Very few kids in school doing childcare only , and around me they are only working 2 days max a week. I just get messages from fellow teacher friends complaining they are bored.

As a country we need to unite together and part of that is getting people back to work. All my leave has been cancelled as has many others not sure why teachers are any different.
Wow, how rude can you be. I don’t know about the teachers in your area but I can assure you that my Mum is going in once a week and doing online video teaching Monday - Friday. She is also marking all work and giving feedback to the work the students are emailing in.

You need to get off your high horse. Don’t preach about being in it all together and slate key workers. I’m sorry but your comment is vile. Shame on you.

Can I just say I bloody love this thread, as with everyone my emotions have been all over the place, some days I’m crying and panicking and some days I’m doing ok. I’ve learnt lots about Banana bread, the rise of Chris Witty fans ( of which I’m one of them ) and some Irish sayings/jokes that I still don’t understand but trying too 😂 I can’t stand Bono ( or Bonio as my dad calls him ) and that’s all I can contribute to the Irish side of this 😂
stay safe everyone 🥰
Just edited to say my sister is a senior school teacher and is working solid the same as her colleagues. Teachers can’t be praised enough in my opinion

please let me in on the secret! went in last night at 11.30 ..no new slots. go on this morning additional days added all booked up 🤬 same with Iceland (ive been trying for over a week )
If you go on between 11.45/11.50 you get added to the que and then once your on the website if your lucky the newest date (3 weeks from today) will have slots free. It took me doing this 5 nights in a row to get one.

P.s. Teachers are amazing ! 🤗

Yeah but at least your in the car! That’s different!

I thought all elderly were classed as extremely vulnerable regardless of health..where I am they're giving priority to all OAP's ?
Not sure if it depends on area but, my Auntie is 77 had measles as a child so one of her lungs stopped growing and suffers from severe asthma, she can barely breath at the best of times. She lives on her own and we are 90 miles away so I have been trying to do her shopping online for her.. Absolutely hopeless. I've tried to add her to the government list by filling in the form but she doesn't qualify either?! But she can go and stand in a queue an hour before everyone else!! Erm no she bloody can't! If she gets this she's a gonna! I have been managing to get her bits from her local co op but it's hit and miss what arrives because it depends what stock they have left, Last week she received £9 worth of her shopping. I can't believe it. I hate to think what people who are totally alone are doing, they are most probably sat starving and scared to death. 😭

I really tried not to bite about teachers, i really did. But I’m fed up of always being the profession that gets moaned about.

I currently work one week in 3 in school. But the other 2 weeks we aren’t in is spent working from home. And I add that the 2 weeks out of school is so that any symptoms have time to show and start isolation. Is it as taxing as being in school? No. Does it benefit your child next year? Absolutely. We send lessons home each day but as an EYFS and SEN teacher these absolutely should be more play based. So if your child is in reception they learn through play in school and that should be continued at home.

When we’re in school we’re working 7am - 5pm with minimal breaks. We have our lunch with the children. The children in schools at the moment are tired. The novelty of being the only ones in has worn off and some are around siblings they wouldn’t normally be with in school and they’ve had enough of each other. It’s hard but we do it because it’s the one small thing we can do to help our country at this moment in time.

We are going in over the Easter holidays, May holidays and if this continues over the summer holidays we’ll be in then too.

Then there’s next year. We might not be doing as taxing work right now but next year we will be working full throttle trying to close gaps that have been created by this - trying to catch children up on half a year of learning.

Then there’s the children - you want your little love to come back to school in the summer and work until October!? The children need breaks more than the teachers so I’d love to see how that pans out.

If the government want us to come back over the summer holidays we will absolutely do it but it would run teachers and children into the ground. We absolutely don’t work as hard as other front line services right now, and I’d never compare us but we also aren’t sat on our arses doing duck all.
Excuse me for being stupid-just curious what is happening to keyworkers kids over the summer? Not relevant to me as my daughter is only one but your post just reminded me of summer holidays and that their parents still need to work but kiddies will need a break? Don’t envy teachers or parents of school aged kids at all, must be a nightmare all round for people. 😔

On Sky News now; Boris still in St Thomas's with persistent symptoms. He's still in good spirits and still working (getting the daily red box). He's being kept in for observation.

I have a feeling they aren't being as honest as they could be with this so not to over panic people.

I'm sure they are been honest. If they wanted to scare the public into staying at home properly then they would tell us how bad he is.

Some people need to be panicked though, either that or a rocket up their backside!
Agreed-Boris seemed to have very mild symptoms at the start and I imagine people were thinking ‘see-don’t know what people are worried about,he’s fine’. I thought a bit of honesty about what’s going on would be helpful to get people to wind their necks in and behave.(unless of course they are being honest and we are being paranoid but I’m not sure about that)

Are there no community groups set up for her area ? maybe check with her local councillor or even her GP (GP surgeries are operating as normal only with additional measures )people here are delivering meals ,food packages and medications to the vulnerable ..Yes doesn't bear thinking about that someone would be left to starve :(
