I think the introduction of Cilla and Sean is where the rot starts to come in.

Watching it again, Cilla is like something out of a pantomime and the least said about Sean, the better. Lord knows how he lasted beyond six months, nevermind still being around 20+ years later.

I watched the Angela/Katy storyline at the time and remember this period missing something back then. I think I started to dip in and out around 2006 and more or less gave it up not long after.

Watching Classic Corrie there are so many decent characters who are in it for only a year or two. Either working in the factory or the Rovers. And yet we’re left with him.
