Classic Coronation Street #2 I say Coronation Street #2

I was running massively behind, haven’t quite caught up fully. So much going on!

* I know we’re seeing 10 episodes a week but even without that, Sharon was seeing Danny for about 5 minutes! Saying Sally was having an affair with him is a bit harsh but there’s a fair amount of shenanigans goes on in that street 😳.

* Toyah can get in the bin!

* Maxine’s dress and hair 😔. Different times in the late 90s but even still…

* Corrie clearly got fancy pants camera equipment just before they filmed the hour long special, with the roof-shot view of the Rovers and the camera following everyone around the reception.

* Poor Judy, I vividly remembered her hanging out the washing but if forgotten about the car crash. I’m just watching the episode after the wedding, I’m gearing up for some ugly sobs. I think Gary’s such a good character, and Ian Mercer is a very believable, brilliant actor.

This really was classic Coronation Street

Poor Judy, I always liked the Mallets, I think they could have been a classic Corrie couple if they’d have stayed a few more years. I remember watching this the first time round I was a few weeks off having my first baby and sobbing when she died 😭😭😭.
I‘m sure Gary gets a new partner and leaves, I don’t think there was a massive gap either, I don’t think Gary would have done that.
I need to remember this is just a soap and not real 🙈.
Poor Jack and Vera though, what a twit Terry was

LOL at Blanche in that scene in the Kabin.

Moaning about the 'rotten selection' of Birthday cards and going on about Ken's 60th. 😆

Another cracker from Blanche.

'Jetlag? That's a Newen'! They used to call it lazytitus in my day.'

🤣🤣

Also how she was completely unbothered when Curly was choking on his food in the Cafe. She was just sat there, mug in hand, making barbed remarks whilst everyone else was panicking

The returning Blanche as a regular character in 1999 was certainly a genius idea.

Although I still think she should have returned more regularly between 1981 and 1996. Instead we had a 15 year Blanche-less era.

She should have been around in the Wendy Crozier era and Ken and Deirdre's subsequent split and divorce.

Plus when Deirdre married Samir.

Having lost the likes of Percy and Phyllis a couple of years earlier, the much older cast was starting to become lacking. Maud was on her way out by late '99.

Although it can’t often be helped, I think that’s the most unrealistic thing about soaps - when a major life event happens, people aren’t even mentioned if they’re not a current character. In fact, you don’t even hear them say “I got an email/Christmas card/DM from so and so”, they’re just never mentioned again.

And I know they needed a character to help when Judy fell ill but if Rita and everyone else in the street were at Ashley and Maxeem’s wedding then Ken (but not Deirdre, Anne Kirkbride must’ve been on her hols) probably would’ve been too, rather than having a quiet half at the Rovers

Lol @ Blanche and her arranging Ken's 60th.

Well chuffed he is! 😆

The first episode was the last appearance of Dawn Acton as Tracey Barlow. When the character returns in 2002, it will be Kate Ford in the role.

Dawn wasn't given much to say (or do) in her final episode!

Andy Whyment was seen in The Kabin, in a pre Kirk Sunderland appearance.
