Christmas 2024 #4

Does anyone host Christmas Day and enjoy it? The cooking etc, not the day itself.
We are hosting for the first time, for 15 and I’m worried I’m going to mess up the dinner and never be allowed to host again 😖😂
I cook the meat in November, slice it and freeze it in eai-leav sheets in portion sizes. Then a quick shuzz in the microwave on the day and serve.
When I'm eating at a relatives on Christmas I get told mine is really succulent - it seems that it marinates in the freezer, but the person who hosts us insists on cooking it from scratch on the day. They get really stressed out (Gordon Ramsay MK2), as they do 2 or 3 kinds of meat - can you tell it's a bloke? 😁
I also do my apple sauce early and freeze that.

It’s just a dinner. Loads cook a weekly roast on Sundays, this isn’t much different. Too many people stress unnecessary about getting it perfect. If it’s a disaster just chalk it up as one of those ‘remember when ‘ stories. Our oven broke while we were slow cooking the turkey overnight once. We had to throw it. We managed, there’s always plenty to eat, even if it’s Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Quality Street 😂

Going to hell for this comment but is anyone else’s FYP full of “what I’m getting my x year old” for Christmas? I’ve just seen a 4 year old receiving PLouise and cackling to myself
My FYP is full of arseholes trying to insinuate you’re a bad parent if you spend loads on your kids, or don’t tell your kids only one present is from Santa. Wish they would just fck off and mind their own business.

This is one of my first roasts I will be cooking, so it’s not a weekly thing for me and definitely not in the scale of cooking for 15 🙂

You’ll be fine. Preparation is key. Consider cooking your meat on Christmas Eve, slicing it up and storing it. Take it out to get to room temp Christmas morning, will make your life so much easier.

Thank you, I will try this.
Also going to prep all the veg the night before so I don’t all that faff on the day as well.
Also juggling a 1yr old so want to spend as much time with him as I can ☺️

Prep as much as you can the day before. I’m the queen of M&S, love their roasties, colcannon mash, croquettes, cocktail sausages. Also Iceland have a finest range…their honey glazed parsnips and carrots are outstanding and go in the airfryer. Less stress again, take them out the airfryer into a bowl and boom. Do your gravy last, so it’s roasting hot. You’ll be fine.

Ask others to pitch in and help. Having a 1 year old is hard work in itself. Asign jobs. Also there’s lots of pages online as to what can be done in advance. I hate cooking on Christmas Day because I feel it sucks up the day, so I asign jobs or prep in advance. Funnily I find cooking and preparing on Christmas Eve is enjoyable.

Write a list with timings, work backwards from the time you want to serve. Then set timers, Alexa in the kitchen is my saviour.
Like person said before - cheat! Ready made roasties etc if you can afford it.
Also don’t go ott and feel that you have to do sprouts with pancetta, carrots with orange etc. plain sprouts and carrot are just fine and you have cranberry sauce, stuffing to add flavour. Ready made of course!
also remember cooks privilege means you don’t have to do any washing up and people should be on hand to pass you a drink or chocolate whenever needed!

Last year me and my husband spent Christmas Day together just us, as we live quite far away from family. We normally travel to see them but last year was so relaxed and enjoyable, we’re doing the same again this year (with our puppy this year too - FYI, he has been well and truly spoilt 🤣) We have party food and Buck’s Fizz all day and just play games and watch films. Then Boxing Day we’re travelling up to see family and have a nice Airbnb booked so we have our own space and can actually enjoy going to see all our families without feeling like we’re staying in someone’s space and not rushing around, can’t wait 🥰

I also love New Years, we’ve had a tradition for years where we get a pizza and have a few drinks and (I try to) stay up til midnight and watch the fireworks, I normally need a power nap before then as I am an old woman 👵🏼

I get what people are saying about being sad when the run up is over but let’s try and just make loads of things to look forward to throughout the year to make us happy. Maybe we should start a new thread about exciting things we have to look forward to each month 🥰 Before we know it we’ll be back again here next year!!

Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year!! 🎄🎅🏼

Seen a tiktok of someone saying they used to leave beer out for Santa when younger but they'll get their kids to do Bailey's and their friend says they do milk.
What do/did you all do? We did a shandy for Santa
