My top 5 so far of 2023

Project Hail Mary - just
The Winners - loved more than Beartown, soz
The People on Platform 5 - just cosy and cute, not too heavy
Demon Copperhead - a slow starter, but couldn't put it down towards the end
Remarkably Bright Creatures - such a random concept that just worked so well

After seeing it on someone's top 5 upthread, I've just borrowed The Lovely Bones for my next read - it's been on my TBR for ages.

One of the things I love about this thread is how we all have such different opinions about the same book. I’m a big Sophie Kinsella fan, and I think I just really related to a lot of The Burnout, so I really loved it - completely understand the criticisms though 🥰
That was the reason I was looking forward to it 😂 The synopsis really spoke to me but I am failing to connect as much as I thought I would, at least so far. Still early in the book, maybe I'll get invested after all. x

The Lovely Bones is one of very few books on my shelf that I will keep forever as it’s one of very few books I will read multiple times although I can’t remember the last time I read it. I just checked and mines a first edition published in 2002 so I probably bought it 20ish years ago.

I was so disappointed in the film though.

Other books on my keep forever shelf are Jamaica Inn, Remember Me (Sophie Kinsella), PS I Love You, White (Rosie Thomas), Remember Me (Lesley Pearce), The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, Touching the Void, The Beckoning Silence (Joe Simpson).

That’s all I can remember for now!

Omg someone else who’s read Remember Me! It’s my fave Sophie Kinsella and actually one of my fave books.

yes it’s one of my favourites! Laugh out loud, crying with laughter funny. I’ve not read it for a long time though. I found many of the shopaholic books really good too. She was honestly one of my favourite authors but then I struggled with a couple and not read some of her most recent ones.

Same here. I loved the shopaholic series, I loved Becky Bloomwood and they were laugh out loud funny. But I've not enjoyed her other books particularly she seems to have lost her touch a bit.

Me too. And I remember the first time I read domestic goddess I laugh out load. However, second time I read it I didn’t find it as funny. But, yeah the shopaholic series, just loved it.

@Caffeine Fiend I'm glad you recommended listening to Born a Crime.

I finished it today, what a great book, and definitely made better with all of Trevor's accents.

It really is fantastic. I felt like I got a little crush on Trevor listening.

He is so very funny, his humour isnt for everyone but I find him hilarious. He is also just all round a great human being imo. He always seems to have great takes on most real life situations.

It is truly the best audio book Ive ever listened to 😍

I started Black Cake last night and was confused by page 3 over the character's names. Benny for a girl and Byrony for a boy? Then I got confused over the sexuality of the girl (names again) and as the story progressed, it went off on a different tangent so I gave up before I flung my kindle across the room in frustration.

Currently on book 114 of an 80 target. I'll go through my Goodreads to find 5* reads cause I can't remember right now.

I loved Black Cake. I have this weird idea it was a book club pick at one point but Im not sure why I think that. Maybe it was.

I listened on audio and I was sure the mans name was Byron not Byrony but Ive not seen it in print so maybe its supposed to be pronounced like Byron but its been spelled weird.

However I will agree I was confused with all the different characters and flash backs and going forward.

Agreed. I really liked his outlook on life, despite living in tough times and going through all that he did, he is so positive.

I was so sad at the end with the thought of his mum being shot but was so glad she miraculously pulled through - loved the bit about praying to Jesus is her insurance.

I had a 2012 kindle which had frozen in about the same year, and I didn't realise you could trade them in until the last thread. I was only keeping it because I didn't know how to dispose of it. Just got the message that it got accepted (which is good because I'd already spent the £5 voucher). Hopefully the discount code will last until Black Friday!

(All this just to say, thank you, thread!)

Excellent 🥳🥳 I got a kindle paperwhite for £75 with my 20% off, £20 voucher and the prime deals. I was thrilled.

The amount I spend on kindle books amazon will still be making plenty from me.

I’m surprised you only got £5. I feel like they ripped you off.

That is a good deal! (Yes, same for me, and my 400+ unread kindle books)

I wasn't using it anyway, and it's 11 years old and didn't function, so I don't feel hard done by! Mostly relieved that I won't have to move with it again!

So after my pre-order issue with Waterstones, they tried to take payment again and it went through but it’s still not been despatched. Wish I’d just waited as I only pre-ordered from there because amazon were saying they couldn’t deliver to my address when I ordered it but they can now. It’s Britney’s book so I am frantically avoiding all social media as I was expecting to get it today but I suspect it will be at least Thursday before I get it if it’s not even been dispatched yet!

Same I've been avoiding the TV as it's all over the showbiz bits, I'm getting it on audible but I don't get a new credit until tomorrow!
