I retract my statement about box ticking on launch night. Just had a wonderful conversation with my sibling, who is a transgender female, about how, despite there being no ill meaning and it being a general observation, it could be seen as offensive. Despite my knowing that I'm not transphobic in any way, sometimes my thumbs engage before my brain. So, this is an apology to anyone who was irked or offended by it.

I’m not saying trans people can’t be violent, anyone can. I don’t believe trans people are more likely to be violent compared to others, especially when it comes to violence against women. We all know it’s heterosexual, cis men who are the biggest problem there but no one is campaigning to keep them from hurting women. A minority is always the easier target.


Anyway I’m not engaging with this debate anymore, there is a dedicated thread for it. Probably best to leave it there.

I think some shows are like that and dont think as much about who they put in just ticking the box. BB to me has always felt more they pick the person & if it ticks a box its a bonus

To be fair I was quite shocked myself when she said that, and also shocked they left it in!

I do hope they turn around and be like 'lol jokes Olivia you're up for elimination babes xx'

I don't think it was that bad of a comment to make within the context - everyone there didn't understand half of what she sung. If anyone has communicated with people who struggle with accents because English is their second language, you know you might have to drop your accent a little bit and slow down slightly (preferably not snails pace as some people do) if you talk a bit fast

At most it's a bit uncomfortable for Yinrun to be "called" out like that

I watched the live stream yesterday and I felt a bit bad for her because someone made a joke and she didn't understand it, she asked Trish what the joke meant a few times but the conversation continued on without anyone explaining it to her. Honestly I didn't get it myself

Yeah, I'm catching up on last night's right now and she seemed to have a little giggle about it herself. She didn't seem offended and I don't think Olivia meant anything by it. If anything, she was taking the piss out of her own accent.

I wasn't offended by your comments, but I was one of the people who criticised your initial view about box ticking so I appreciate this post regardless! :D

Just to explain a bit more, it's often a tactic adopted by the likes of the Daily Mail, where they see diversity as a 'bad' thing, so they'll moan about woke box ticking, etc. I didn't think you were saying that, I'm just explaining how I (and perhaps some others) can see that phrase.

Big Brother seems to go off the old adage of "variety is the spice of life". The producers would be aware that if they had too many similar people, it would potentially be less interesting and could alienate more viewers who might then switch off.
