BBC radio stations #3

nooooo not first thing in the morning!

if i took a shot every time one of them said something idiotic i don’t think i would make it to work. they played a tiktok today from a guy with a very strong american south accent (guessing alabama or somewhere) and danni said “he sounds almost like one of those south american accents”. yes danni, that’s because he HAS ONE.

how do they get on the radio?! do they break in and no one has the heart to tell them to stop?!
I noticed that too and rolled my eyes. They both just sound so thick, and they somehow come across as absolute try-hards but also quite arrogant if that makes any sense? They sound like they think they're being hilarious but it just misses every time.

I’m enjoying Scott Mills on R2, feels like nostalgia for millennials. He’s asking for listeners stories from when they were a kid and called into kids tv to ask a band a question. It’s given me flashbacks to when I was a kid and phoned into Disney channel live on air 🤣
I actually prefer him on R2 than R1, I think he was trying a bit too hard to keep up with the younger audience on R1, whereas now he seems more comfortable embracing his love of cheesy pop music circa 2000 😁

I turned it on this morning and immediately said out loud “not the work experience twins again!”

If I had a shot for every time Danni says “alright me lovers” I’d be in A&E with alcohol poisoning. Do the producers encourage them to put the regional accents on more? The welsh one whose name escapes me has the worst one. She rolls her R’s so intentionally that you can tell when she’s forgotten to and has to say it again with extra Welsh-ness.

Also, I switch off after Greg when Ricky Melvin and Charlie squawk their way on to the airwaves. I don’t understand the dynamic there at all. She’s strong enough to hold a show on their own and they’re clearly a double act. It’s bizarre.

omg sian eleri! i should say that i AM welsh but i have never heard someone with such a deliberate welsh accent before (if that even makes sense). like you say, everything is so intentional and it annoys me.

charlie drives me crazy. she does not have a laugh for radio 🤣 it’s a bizarre setup because the guys work well together and she’s just there, likewise with vic, kate and jamie now in the afternoons. trios NEVER work well and i have no clue why radio 1 is obsessed with having them (and also duos).

I used to love them on kiss, I thought when they moved to the beeb they would get more telly

Sam and Danni are driving me mad on radio 1 in the mornings. The forced innuendo about a ‘semi’ made me turn over immediately.

The only R1 presenters I can tolerate are Greg James and Matt and Mollie. I could not STAND Matt Edmondson for years but I love him now. Him and Mollie bring the best out in one another.

Sam and Danni, vick Katie and Jamie, dean, that Danny Beard, rickie Melvin and Charlie all need to get in the bin!

I like Radio 2, but as a younger millennial, I’m not that keen on the music that is played.

I flipping love drag race so was very excited when Danny Beard came along, but he was so miserable sounding and pissed off when he did his show. Like people would text in going “give me a shout out for my besties hen do!” And he’d literally go yeah no 🤔 I think he’s left now, probably for the best..

Also does anything else think arielle free sounds like she’d just rolled in from a night out? All raspy and fried.

Yeh R2 is very hit and miss! Scott and Rylan keep it pretty current, then Sarah Cox comes on and the music is cringe 🤣 Then you've got like the golden oldies stuff and Elaine Page ect. I think they're desperate to get younger people interested, but also want to hold onto the older audience too, which make it a real mish mash of eras.

It's a real mishmash. For some absolutely unfathomable reason my OH loves Elaine Paige's showtunes 😂 Only when we're in the car going somewhere (I think 😂).
I like Sara Cox. I like the Half Wower as there are some bangers in there usually.
Tbh I usually listen to Radio 4 or local. Or BBC Sounds.

I like Vick but not with Katie and Jamie, the dynamic is off. You could tell she was actually friends with Jordan so it worked better.

Listened to R2 most of my adult life and normally enjoy Zoe Ball but have suddenly noticed that she says er, or erm as a filler between sentences, words, thoughts a ridiculous amount so decided this morning I’m turning off. You have millions of listeners if you don’t what you’re saying write it down ffs.
I've heard her mention having menopausal brain fog type memory issues etc but I think that she's always done it...at least for a very long time anyway.

My OH can't stand listening to her for that reason (also because he finds Zoe annoyingly overdramatic, hyper and scatty), but if he wants me to get his brekky and packed lunch ready (while I'm doing my own!) then he unfortunately has to put up with it! 😆

My trusty little old DAB radio, in the kitchen, is permanently stuck on R2 (can't change station due to a cracked display screen, from when a tin fell out the cupboard above and landed on it!), so he gets the pleasure of me singing along to all kinds of rubbish! 🤣

It's seen a lot of use but I can't bear to part with it (the semi-broken radio, not the partner!) so it just stays tuned in to R2 which kind of suits my tastes anyway, most of the time.

Is it a bit weird to be so sentimentally attached to an old-skool mains-powered radio, especially in this day and age, when I can just use my phone or other gadgets to play radio/music? Call me old-fashioned but I just think there's something special about listening to live radio, as it's being broadcast, on an actual radio with proper buttons to press and knobs/dials to turn.

Just read that back. I sound like I'm turning into Jeremy Vine! 😱

If it's weird, then I am too! I upgraded my old radio to a lovely Roberts DAB and Internet radio and constantly use it. I even have a memory stick with old MP3s loaded plugged in the top! I mostly listen to FIP and the Buzz these days, but it's great to listen to Japanese, Icelandic or Chilean stations through it as the mood strikes.
My 8 year old self would be GIDDY at the prospect 😄

I have about 6 D.A.B radios 😬 & 2 internet radio around the house, wife has now banned any more, if out shopping and I spotted one going cheap in Aldi or somewhere I'd nab it.
My 2 favourites are the cheapest - a £20 Bush internet one from Argos & a German made one from Aldi, great sound quality.
Been listening to a lot of Australian stations & there's a brilliant Synth-Rock station in Germany, very 80's.
Always preferred radio to television, it seems more personal, you often bond with certain presenters.
I still miss Steve Wright tbh.
