Barbie movie

Greta Gerwig is a feminist filmmaker, she doesn’t make kids films 🍿 not expecting the whole world to know that though!

Like I know you guys know it but :)

Yes I know she's a feminist filmmaker, but she still chose a children's iconic toy, the audience would want to be children. Also....
Spoiler to avoid ruining the film.
the story and the characters made many strong statements on patriarchy and male privilege. yet she cast a trans gender woman as a female barbie 🤔

Anyway it's a great film but not a fluffy Barbie one for little ones.

Lots of people are feminists and believe that… Trans people are allowed to act in films. I’m not sure how those two beliefs are mutually exclusive.

In any case, it is a Trans actor and not a Trans character (by virtue of them playing a plastic doll who doesn’t have any genitals, let alone a gender).

Me and my partner did the double bill yesterday - Barbie first and then Oppenheimer.

I’ve loved Gerwig’s work for nearly a decade now and I was really impressed by her writing and direction. It was a difficult job - pushing Mattel as far as she could, wide ranging audience and a tricky concept.

This was also some of Robbie’s best work - particularly the scene with the elderly woman and the pre-ending scene.

I saw the movie out of curiosity and here are my thoughts:

1. It was a let down. It wasn’t funny at all and the few bits of ‘humor’ it has were dreadful.

2. The trailers on YouTube pretty much reveal the entire story.

3. The movie kept regurgitating ‘cliche’ feminist speech. The movie wasn’t ‘deep’ and you have to be rather simple minded to think this movie is ‘deep’ or profound (though the woman who was sitting next to me kept crying the whole time). I’m not criticising feminism at all, on the contrary, I’m just saying they could have made it a bit more intellectual and sophisticated than the cliche they kept serving.

4.The movie is definitely geared towards adults. None of this would make any sense to a young child.

The only positive point was getting to see the different types of Barbies that were created and discontinued and getting a glimpse into how Barbie came about.

In essence, if I had to pay to see it again, I wouldn’t!

I laughed so much at it. I saw Oppenheimer first but weirdly preferred barbie. It was stupid humour but I enjoyed it. I couldn’t not laugh every time alan came on!
I choked on my drink when the kens started playing a matchbox twenty song

Did the Oppenheimer-Barbie double bill yesterday. Was so looking forward to Barbie, really wanted to like it, but honestly I thought the story was kinda all over the place, just a bit of a mess and I was bored through a lot of it. Loved everything with Ryan Gosling, the colourful sets were great and there were a few other random bits that made me laugh but I didn’t find it as funny or engaging as I was expecting to. The Mattel boardroom guys and the mother/daughter storylines in particular I just couldn’t get into. Seems like I’m in the minority though and a lot of people loved it!

Yeah I found the mother and daughter boring and Mattel boardroom wasn’t funny. I just wanted to get back to Barbie 😆

I did the double too with Barbie first. Really enjoyed it, don’t agree that the trailers gave the story away.

I am pretty sure I dozed off a little during Oppenheimer. It was good and you can see that it will be up there during awards season. But I feel that it needs a second viewing to fully understand the story. I think I will wait until it’s on streaming services to watch again - even though I do have an unlimited card so could technically go again for free, it’s just too long
