Australian Pop Culture and Influencer Podcasts #2

Very true about the echo chamber! And their tight northern beaches social circle kind of freaks me out. It gives grown girl bully vibes.

I went to their last show, so closing night. The ‘meet&greet’ was awkward, just a bunch of us lining up whilst they stood in front of a podium to get a photo with each person. I expected it to be more mingling, canapés and drinks at a bar. Instead it was like I was 9 years old again lining up to get my Steps album signed by the band at Westfield mall. A quick chat with a very professional Gem and a drunk Kate who ran away mid conversation to have a laugh with her friend. We took a photo and were quickly asked to move along.

Their cliquey friends kept ignoring other DLs and talking to each other. It just made me feel pretty tit. And then I remembered I paid money to be there. Foolish of me!!

I’d be keen to go to a gathering with Lisa Carlaw and her mate from that other podcast, their night out looks like fun. And they don’t act like they’re better than others.
These podcasters thrive on making their listeners feel like part of a community where everyone is equal and just like them. I’ve listened to podcasts in the past where I’ve related so much to the hosts that I’ve believed if we met we absolutely would be friends. That’s the skill in it and that’s how they end up making serious cash from half baked live shows, merch and meet and greets. Of course they actually hate their listeners and find them draining. They don’t need or want any new friends unless it’s someone who can benefit them.

I’m another note, Ella Ding’s new kardashian voice and hair saga is so funny. She is such a twit.

A parasocial relationship

A parasocial relationship
Every celebrity/ x list podcaster relies on parasocial relationships but I guess some are more successful than others at hiding their distain for their followers.

I feel like some of the reality tv podcasters and podcasters from a non media background are especially clueless when it comes to maintaining a genuine audience connection. You can hear them getting the shits with the very people who have made them.

This is the kind of thing that drives me wild. Victoria is obscenely wealthy and good for her, but quit with all the silly “oh I’m so poor like the rest of you!” bullshit.
