Australian Pop Culture and Influencer Podcasts #2

Gem's condescencion toward Afterpay was the first definite ick moment I remember having. She was sooo scathing. Like, sorry not everyone can afford the unexpected at the drop of a hat...
Gem is so incredibly privileged and always has been. Definitely agree it's 1000 times worse since they have run out of genuine things to talk about though. I'm going to their live show with a friend and I think I will still find it funny, but wish they would stfu about it. I skip most EPs now!

You know what I don't have time for ... We Don't Have Time For This. I was an OG listener from ep 1 but interest started waning toward the end of last year and after slogging through a catch-up session of the last five or six eps (not including Bestie Hotline, they've never tickled my pickle) I think I am done. Truly. Left the Facebook group today (am I tripping thinking it used to be real and funny? It's now just a bunch of privileged wank?) and couldn't even finish the last few episodes. The vibe ... has ... changed. Hard unrelate to 90% of what they say. The trenches don't actually have to trench that hard; they whinge about rods they've made for their own backs while actually being in SWEET positions (Revz crying poor all the time but stay-caying at expensive Sydney hotels, travelling to the US, heaps of Botox, shopping all the time? Gem clearly loaded complete with au pair, two homes, designer clothing etc? Heaps of family support? Massive village?)

Even started to get the ick over Gem's Instagram content which I didn't think I would. I'd followed her for years before the podcast started, that's how I was in there like swimwear from day dot. Some of the personal tit she shares about her kids and family just blows my mind, especially after freaking out over the peachy sex toy PR packages coming to her home address but ... still posting heaps of easily identifiable stuff ... openly talking about her kids sports and hobbies, where they are when ... swimwear pics ... footage of her littlest pissing himself?!?

And SO. MUCH. SHOW CHAT.

Over and out 👋

She definitely has personal vendettas that go beyond journalism. This Dannii person is a nutcase though no doubt about that
Spot on. I used to work with her cousin and her whole family can’t stand Dannii. They’ve had media outlets reaching out to them and they want nothing to do with her or them. They all say she’s just fucked in the head.

Zara has the worst taste in fashion and the fan girls lap it up and tell her how amazing she looks 😂
Nah. I think out of the two of them that Michelle has the worst fashion sense.
imagine thinking this looks good and then posting it to your fashion based poddy insta as the first image 🙄

HARD AGREE. I can’t stand their podcast anymore. I relate to zero of their chat and I was obsessed last year whilst on maternity leave. the vibe has totally changed and I don’t get why!!

I paid VIP tix pricing to their last show and it was very disappointing. A merch bag full of cheap mcobeauty stuff, a slapped together amateur drama show that reminded me of highschool and then when I met them they were incredibly drunk (Kate) and quite rude.

I definitely need to leave the Facebook group soon.

Please do go on!

My hot take is they're just too deep in the echo chamber now. Gem's never had a real job and seems to have always been quite well off, aside from drama school and early acting days. (Even then I get the feeling there was a firm safety net around her. I don't think her version of poor is the same as someone whose parents couldn't bail them out if need be.) Revz provided the reality check vibe on those fronts but she's been full time on the pod and their shows for around a year now and they are fully in their own bubble. It shows ... they have a super tight knit social circle and seem to take their algorithms as gospel for what the rest of the world is like. SO much of what they say about zoomers, boomers, the economy, etc is like, well maybe in your suburb or on your TikTok ... cannot relate!

Obviously they can only talk about what's true to them so I'm not criticising that, necessarily; that's just why I think it's grown to feel unrelatable to a lot of listeners. Different perspective and experience to a lot of people.

INTERESTING. I wonder if this is why ticket sales haven't been as good this time around? They're still flogging the show hard and they're bloody into it now.

I wonder too if there have been words behind the scenes about that ... being a non drinker + uber concerned about her professional image I can't imagine Gem would be thrilled with that from Kate!

Very true about the echo chamber! And their tight northern beaches social circle kind of freaks me out. It gives grown girl bully vibes.

I went to their last show, so closing night. The ‘meet&greet’ was awkward, just a bunch of us lining up whilst they stood in front of a podium to get a photo with each person. I expected it to be more mingling, canapĂ©s and drinks at a bar. Instead it was like I was 9 years old again lining up to get my Steps album signed by the band at Westfield mall. A quick chat with a very professional Gem and a drunk Kate who ran away mid conversation to have a laugh with her friend. We took a photo and were quickly asked to move along.

Their cliquey friends kept ignoring other DLs and talking to each other. It just made me feel pretty tit. And then I remembered I paid money to be there. Foolish of me!!

I’d be keen to go to a gathering with Lisa Carlaw and her mate from that other podcast, their night out looks like fun. And they don’t act like they’re better than others.
