Someone I work with believes nearly every conspiracy theory going.
His latest one is that the Covid vaccine will be used to control us all and we will be put into concentration camps to work...
He also thinks that government put fluoride in the water supply as a method of mind control
Are you in the UK? If so, they don't add fluoride to the water... -- it occurs naturally in some water but I believe the government doesn't add extra to the water.
Here in Canada, they actually do add extra fluoride into the water. It helps prevent tooth decay.

I absolutely agree that there have been, throughout history, large-scale cover-ups and sadly there inevitably always will be.
We hear so many historical cases of child sex abuse covered up over decades within the church, schools, children's homes etc, we learn so many times when the police have set someone up or hidden evidence to hide their incompetence. There is so much corruption within Governments and all positions of power are open to abuse.

It is so important that we aren't frightened to challenge these things and we shouldn't necessarily just believe everything we're told but in the case of these crazy "plandemic" theories where people are inciting others to refuse to wear masks, not adhere to lockdown and not have the vaccine, this oversteps the line into dangerous territory.

This situation DOES seem surreal and makes you feel there's something "not right" about it-we've never lived through anything like it so it's unsurprising people feel uneasy.
But to me the surprise is that something of this scale hasn't happened sooner.

With an ever-expanding population, with international travel being so accessible and the harm we are doing trying to mess with nature this was surely inevitable?

Pandemics are not a new phenomena, we have experienced them throughout history, it is just that this is the 21st century and it all feels so alien to us.

As humans we constantly want explanations for everything and I think for many people it is easier to believe it's a man-made conspiracy and part of a bigger plan rather than nature fighting back.

They're not scared but they then feed on the fears of others. Like those who are on the fence and nervous about having the vaccine, they like to scare the tit out of them so they will join their "cult".
Totally! Another point is that in the 21st century we have the knowledge and technology to fight this virus. Imagine being around at the time of the Black Death when the best medical treatment you could hope for would be a poultice made of herbs and potato peelings!

I thought fluoride was added all over the uk but apparently only some parts. I was shocked to read that tooth decay is the leading cause of hospital admissions for 6-10 year olds though. Although last time my dentist yanked a wobbly tooth from my child, she did say that she doesn’t usually see them in such good condition- I thought she was just being polite but maybe she wasn’t!

This thread has been a breath of fresh air to me as I was getting so drained by the conspiracy theories that are so prevalent now, I think I need to have a break from the internet tbh!

Yep I’m in the uk. I avoid talking to him about this stuff because there is no point, he doesn’t listen to the counter arguments (ie the facts that prove him wrong)

Ugh! I despise this back-patting attitude of sneerinh superiority:

"We're better than the sheep"
"You're all ignorant"
"It must be so sad to never question anything and blindly listen to the media"
"In Nazi Germany, you would've been concentration camp staff while we alone would question the system"

Bro you believe there are tunnels full of abused mole children under New York City and Donald Trump is the Second Coming, your "journey of awakening" may not be all it seems...

Yes! I often see it brought up that they wouldn't be Nazis in Germany as they can think for themselves ... while doubting science and burning 5g masts 😂 😂

Absolutely, if anyone did go and listen to Skeptic of the north, it's the same principles that Hitler propaganda used, reach the people that already have 'fringe' beliefs, (yoga, crystals, mysticism) as they are easier to suck in.

Yes! I hadn't really joined the dots before but reading the Cosmo article and your comment above has been a sudden lightbulb moment.

All of my old school friends who have jumped on the CT bandwagon are those interested in healing, spiritualism, supernatural phenomena etc. I could get why that would translate to them being anti-vax as these people are the ones who reject conventional medicine in favour of alternative therapies but I was scratching my head over how that would map over into joining any agenda which is pro-Trump, the two ideologies seeming totally at odds with one another.

Yet the targeting of those types of people by Q-Anon makes perfect sense as these people already look for an alternative reality so Q-Anon groups play upon this, their belief in mysticism and witchcraft even, their distrust of science and then throw in some Satan worshipping high profile Democrat supporting celebrities and job's a good 'un!

Suddenly Trump, who doesn't give a tit about saving the planet and is the antithesis of what they would normally believe in, becomes the saviour of the world...

I actually find it quite offensive that they think that those who do not believe in conspiracy theories would happily have killed Jews in Nazi Germany.
There is no correlation between the two and if they think there is, then it just shows me that there is something wired incofre tlt in their brains.
They are the ones who appear to lack the empathy gene not the “sheeple” - oh how amusing is that term? Laugh? Oh yes, it’s so witty I almost did!

It's particularly offensive because many of the theories they spout are deeply, deeply anti-semitic. A key reason why Jewish people have been so persecuted throughout history is baseless conspiracies about them secretly controlling the banks, media etc.

My grandmother has been anti-vax since before it was popular - ever since the late 1980s I believe, she knew a family who were convinced that a vaccine had caused their child's autism and she believed it. She doesn't have any New Age-type beliefs although she does believe in angels, and "alternative medicine"/homoeopathy etc

An offshoot of the anti-vax movement seems to be "anti-gyn" - conspiracies around gynaecological care. I can see where some of this comes from, especially in the USA. Many states allow anaesthetised women to be given internal exams without their knowledge or consent so that medical students can practice on them; and there is a lot of pressure on women to submit to internal exams so they can keep their health insurance or get a prescription for birth control. But as usual what may have started as legitimate concerns is growing into conspiracy theories and a gateway to anti-vax or QAnon etc. beliefs

One of the worst ones at the moment is Ct’s sharing pics of Chris Whitty and saying he’s evil and looks like a sex offender/weirdo. No evidence at all for this, it seems to be because he’s not very photogenic or good looking. It’s honestly disgusting the way they accuse anyone they perceive to be ‘the enemy’ as a weirdo. Its their go to insult at this point.

edit: not sure why p e a d o gets automatically changed to weirdo?

I don’t know the official answer but it could be for reasons similar to the point you make about labelling someone a P without any evidence, it’s quite a damaging accusation to make.

It’s a disgusting allegation to make. It does seem to be their go to as it’s the worst thing I think you can be accused of being. I can’t find the words to describe how I actually feel about it but I feel it’s like a sort of insult to the victims of P’s. It’s like glossing over that this is a real thing that causes so much suffering just so you can throw a verbal punch at someone who doesn’t think like you. Shame on anyone who accuses anyone of that without a scrap of evidence or based on their looks or job. Absolute shame on you.

My partner and I actually discussed this the other day. The fact some CTs have resorted to attacking his appearance rather than finding any credible evidence to dispute what he says just sums up how reliable their ‘facts’ are.

I also find, more generally, this attiutde of someone "looking like a sex offender/abuser" or whatever damaging in and of itself. It basically means that anyone who doesn't "look like" that is trusted and they can end up committing awful crimes, it always makes me think of that "good looking" serial killer in the 1970s, (cannot rememebr his name?) and even now one of the things always mentioned is how shocking he was because he was attractive and didn't "look like the type"
