cost of living crisis, a huge number of the population struggling to heat their homes - and Alex is advising people ensure that they turn the temperature on their thermostat down as a skincare tip to help avoid dry or itchy skin! 👌🏻

ffs. i very much doubt people are prioritising soft skin when they are freezing cold in their 11°c house - especially when living in such cold temperatures causes dry skin, exacerbates eczema, cracked, sore, bleeding knuckles, chillblains - and even frostbite, especially for the elderly people living in homes they can't afford to heat - and the cold weather draws moisture from the skin. but hey, if you are as privileged as Alex, and able to heat your home at a toasty 19°c - be aware that such warmth can also dry your skin! no worries about cost - Alex is prioritising her skin, because she doesn't have to worry about affording food or heating! any families struggling to keep their kids warm over the school holidays, simply "turn down" the thermostat to 17.5°c to protect your skin - even if you can't afford to actually turn the heating on! 🙄🙄

like seriously, did she even think before sharing that reel?! she is really rubbing her wealth and privilege in people's faces and simply does not care, because it is earning her money, and as a result, she can heat her house! 😡

I know Alex is a dick and is really shortsighted but it blows my entire mind that we live in a country where people who are putting the heating on this winter are considered privileged. Truly sickening. But that’s a conversation for another thread.
I think in Alexs case it's more the fact she's suggesting turning the heating down for vanity reasons and not for saving money which I would imagine is why most don't have their heating on or turned upto 19' !!

yeah, totally agree! it's an absolutely horrific situation where being able to turn on the heating is a privilege, and people are struggling to afford food, feed their children and heat their homes. this country is in an. abhorrent state. 💔

but yeah, the last thing anyone needs right now is Alex highlighting the fact that she can afford to keep her house at 19°c, and isn't lowering the thermostat to save money, but as a skincare technique! she lives in a totally different world to the majority of the population. 😡

Lots of people are going to die this winter because they simply cannot afford to stay warm enough to live.
Alex needs to check her privilege and stop going on about how the weather will affect her skin.

exactly this. and it also makes absolutely no sense to say that people having their heating set too high is the cause skin problems, when dry, itchy skin can be caused by low temperatures and a lack of adequate nutrition - thus the advice for those people who are struggling with sore skin who can't afford heating and/or food would presumably be "simply increase your thermostat to 17.5°c and buy yourself
some nutritious food - problem solved!" but hey, luckily for Alex, her dry skin is not the result of malnutrition or living in an unheated house - it's the result of keeping her house too warm! 🙄🙄

I'm a serial lurker over here but I just have to say this after watching the latest 'almond mum' video she's just posted and realising I'd seen the concept posted by someone else in the past.

I know nothing is really original on social media these days but literally EVERY reel / video that Alex posts, and often her instagram captions too, is a straight up copy of someone else's. Very rarely does she credit a creator who's either come up with or used the idea previously, but I'm convinced that none of her ideas are original.

As far as I'm aware she doesn't have any qualifications in the industry she claims to contribute to and her content suggests that she doesn't have any new ideas to offer either. I haven't read her book but I assume that it's simply a regurgitation of anti-diet culture cliches and, as important as these are, I really don't think Alex adds anything to the conversation. It's as if she thinks that she's entitled to speak on a topic just because she has a platform. Maybe that's just how it is these days, but it shouldn't be.

Not to mention, it's pretty dodgy to straight up copy the ideas of people who probably have less followers than her and make it look like it's her own, original concept.

Sorry for the rant but to summarise: why do influencers feel so important, who gave them a platform and how can it be taken off them?? 🙃

She’s like looking at a copy of heat magazine from 2001. It just feels so stuck in the past when trying to make her point.
I found her first when recovering from an ED and trying to fill my feed with positive accounts but hers just doesn’t feel of anything. It’s just a bit look at me using buzz words on this bandwagon

I agree with this, she’s recycling old content just for views. It’s not groundbreaking or relevant to highlight magazine covers from the noughties now. If anything it will be triggering for some of her audience.

I scrolled into the depths of her grid posts a little while ago because I was looking for the name of a company she mentioned. Absolutely all of her content is recycled and done to death. Like the photo of the jeans that are all the same size but vary massively depending on the shop. I saw that about 5 times. And it's not even her photo 🥴

I'm not surprised she is clinging on to the podcast because she has well and truly run out of fresh/engaging content.

Even then, it’s not always a realistic comparison. Depending where the jeans come up to the waist will be different. A high rise size 12 will always be smaller at the waistband than a low rise size 12, as a waist measurement is smaller than a hip measurement. Also the material would make a difference, non stretch, heavy cotton would be cut bigger than stretchy denim that has a lot of give.
