not to drag a nearly-eight-year-old but just another example of bex’s delusion… the fact that she thinks kiddo did the front cover of this book is actually cracking me up, it’s so obvious he only did the inside 💀💀💀

also my cousin is a world-leading early years consultant and i sent the inside drawings to her just out of interest… her response actually killed me off.

TWO YEARS OLD. further proof of bex’s excellent home education program of course…

I told her how old he is…

I did mention that he’s autistic etc if that impacts her assessment but she says it shows a profound lack of ‘basic experiences’… she has no idea who Bex is or any of the wider context, so it’s interesting that she was able to pick this out.

It’s just sad.

I remember in primary 4 (aged 8) we had to draw a Roald Dahl character and our drawings were way more advanced.

The first picture is an example of what a SIX year old should be able to draw. The second is a drawing by an 8 year old. She is doing him a disservice by giving him a half-arsed attempt at homeschooling.

Kiddo clearly has additional needs that aren’t being met because of Bex. He needs special education if he is this behind because of his autism and suspected hypermobility (he can’t hold a pencil well but he can grip his Switch and X-box controller just fine).

Bex, nobody is laughing at your kid. I obviously don’t find your child being developmentally delayed funny at all - can see how my flippancy came across that way and apologies for that.

I actually find it very sad that your home ed strategy, which seems to largely comprise of playing Xbox and exercise, apparently hasn’t had much success.

Also not convinced 15 minutes each of working on written English and maths a day for a child who should be in… year 4? is going to set them up for a bright future if they’re already massively behind in these areas.

I’m not poking fun at your child. It’s not his fault he’s mark-making at the level of a 2 year old. We’re trying to get you to see that it appears from the outside that the Bex school of home education has not been working. If you truly know you’re doing all you can, and aren’t just taking the easy roads because you can’t be arsed with the hassle of pushing him out of his comfort zone, then fine! No need to worry in that case! Just shake your head at the idiots on here who don’t know anything and move on.

This isnt homeschooling Bex. These are things that ALL people, young and old, do as part of their daily life. Schooling is an intense period of learning, counting change for the ice cream van isn’t school.

As I mentioned above, the fact kiddo can do everything else with his hands but not write - he can play video games, build stuff, play with lego etc but it hurts to write? Maybe it hurts because his hand muscles are chronically underused in terms of holding pens/pencils. I say that as someone with hypermobility who suffered muscle pain, cramp and nerve pain from prolonged handwriting. I just got on with it and learned when to take breaks.

Everyone can see kiddo would be better off at school, but then Bex wouldn’t have an excuse not to work and claim every benefit under the sun.

Just doing some reading around this pencil-holding stuff. Found this very interesting article that seems rather applicable from what was tweeted of kiddo’s activities over the last few years.

https://www.12ft.io/https://www.the...hold-pencils-due-to-too-much-tech-doctors-say

Some relevant quotes:

Children are increasingly finding it hard to hold pens and pencils because of an excessive use of technology, senior paediatric doctors have warned.
An overuse of touchscreen phones and tablets is preventing children’s finger muscles from developing sufficiently to enable them to hold a pencil correctly, they say.

“To be able to grip a pencil and move it, you need strong control of the fine muscles in your fingers,. Children need lots of opportunity to develop those skills.”

In Bex’s own words, she ‘stopped pushing him to draw’ in 2019.

Six-year-old Patrick has been having weekly sessions with an occupational therapist for six months to help him develop the necessary strength in his index finger to hold a pencil in the correct, tripod grip.

^ perhaps this is the way forward, rather than just accepting that he can’t really write or draw?

“Without research, the risk is that we make too many assumptions about why a child isn’t able to write at the expected age and don’t intervene when there is a technology-related cause,” she said.

‘Suspected hypermobile’ sounds like an assumption.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No actual professional would speculate about the abilities of a child they had not personally seen. Leave her kid out of it.

She’s not making a formal assessment? But 40 years of early years work gives you a pretty good eye for child development, and looking at their drawings is a solid way to assess whether or not they’re being adequately supported to learn fine motor and visual perceptual skills.
