Think you're right re the drinking, the smoking was definitely due to complaints. Can understand as I guess some viewers would be influenced to smoke thinking it was cool however I stand by my opinion that it was better back then, real people, drama and they weren't just on there for a PLT deal as it was still a fresh show.

Regarding the show being better in the older series, the same can be said of most reality shows, the most obvious being Big Brother.

The original housemates literally thought they were just in some kind of experiment, Anna even said in s1 "I wonder if anyone is actually watching this?", whereas the later series were full of the usual suspects just wanting to be famous.
