as honest as alcatraz’s comments were at RG, it basically let djokovic know that it’s easy to get into his head and that alcaraz is still in awe of him. he’ll run right over him again.
Yep, maybe next year things will be a better match. Some of the other 20 year olds might catch up to Alcaraz.

I'm not looking forward to hearing all the BBC commentators suddenly start saying alcarath 🙄. Just silly how they start pronouncing a few select names as if they're a native speaker while totally butchering others. Just say it the same way all the atp people have for years!

Andrew castle is a dire commentator. Won't be the same at all without Sue.

I’ll miss Sue ☹️ never been a fan of Claire Balding. Can’t stand listening to Andrew Castle when he was a shit tennis player himself! I once read Judy Murray mutes the commentators as I’ve noticed John Lloyd always likes to have digs at Andy Murray yet he was another one who didn’t achieve much as a tennis player.

anyone but djokovic is my only answer 🤣

That was my default response for the best part of ten years, until last year as I loathe Kygrios a teensy bit more than I loathe Djokovic.

One the subject of which:

---
I'm a Rafa fan, so don't have anyone to root for this year at Wimbledon. I'd be happy to see Murray win it, but I can't see that happening with the draw he got (he'll face Tsitsipas or Thiem if he gets through to the second round).

Same here on both counts.

Though I am quite liking Norrie, Alcaraz & De Minaur just now, so I’ll be following them with interest. And Jabeur and Gauff on the women’s side.

Last year, during one match I happened to be looking up one of the players on Wiki when Andrew Castle boldly read out an entire chunk of the Wiki page but as if it was facts he already knew and was generously sharing with us simple viewers.

Absolute fraud. How much is it costing the license payer for him to read Wikipedia to us? 🤬

Can't stand Claire Balding she's so self important.

Not surprising at all, Andrew castle clearly doesn't follow tennis much and has a cheat sheet for each match to read stuff. Rather than being knowledgeable and having a brain full of stuff that can be used organically.

So condescending, treats people like they're aliens that just landed. He explained that Wimbledon is played on grass🙄. There's so many good commentators but he gets the good gigs for some reason.

I'll be channeling my Judy Murray and muting him. During queen's final he kept mentioning Andy Murray even though he'd been knocked out first round.

i will never understand why the bbc only used andy roddick for one year! he was knowledgable, funny and had actually played against (or trained with) the players he was discussing. and yet they never had him back for some reason.

all the british commentators are awful - andrew castle talks like he’s speaking to a group of five year olds who are watching tennis for the very first time.

Andrew castle is shit full stop. But I think lots of it is the BBCs direction, they know that almost all of their viewers will tune into just Wimbledon and think the average person is real thick so aim it at a really low level.

I wish you could mute some commentators and just have the court sounds. All that effort to broadcast in 4k but missing simple things like that.

I think he did it from home. I thought that might have been the issue?

he was in the studio the year that he did it, but i do think you’re right that he might have wanted to stay home (i think he has a very young family) the next time, which is probably why he never came back!

it’s a shame because having an actual recent pro there led to some really interesting commentary!

you’re right about the bbc though: they do it with their rugby commentary too and it drives me mad (and even worse because the rugby sometimes bas john inverdale, who i hate 🤣)

Well the BBC wouldn't want that, they'd rather be bland and safe. No talk of gluten that might cause offense for some.

The BBC presenters keep saying Alcaraz is 19  , how can they be so shit at getting the basics right. They clearly missed the whole drama with his wedding-birthday cake in Madrid. They need better recruitment of talent. It's like W1A at times.

One year, when Andy Murray was knocked out early-ish, he did a little bit of BBC commentary. It was great because he was a genuine contemporary of and had on-court experience with pretty much everyone he was commentating on.
It was very short-lived though, as I don’t think he especially enjoyed it.

Think it was a year he didn’t compete due to injury and yes he said he didn’t enjoy it. He’d be wasted on commentary when he retires he would be better coaching.

Djokovic’s son looks very keen on tennis, so I expect he’ll go on to play professionally. Andy Murray said his kids aren’t interested in it and prefer other sports but it got me thinking that you rarely see any kids of the most famous tennis players go on to become tennis players.

I read Agassi’s book and he hated tennis and felt pushed into it so he clearly didn’t want it for his own kids.

The Sebastian Korda erasure ;) though I guess Petr wasn’t that famous, despite winning a slam. But yeah, there haven’t been that many kids of former big players who have gone on to play professional tennis too. Having said that, I agree that one of Djokovic‘s kids will definitely become a pro, that family seems ambitious enough to remain in the business, so to speak.

Another for the anyone but Djokovic. I would absolutely love Andy to win, though i know that's unlikely so i'll take anyone else if he can't. And yes to getting rid of Andrew bouncy Castle, he was really rude to Feliciano Lopez when they were commentating together at Queens.
