UK Politics #10

Is that an argument I can use about someone using a food bank? After all unemployment can happen to anyone. And most salaries are stated before you start employment. Effective financial planning would build a contingency into the plan to allow for this.

You can if you want but my response was to why prioritise blood scandal over WASPI. I'd also prioritise Post Office over WASPI. Blood and Post Office had horrendous outcomes that the victims were in no way responsible for.

And they have security. They've got the triple-lock which is giving them a 4.1% increase in their pensions in April. God, I'm getting tired of whinging boomers.

As from April £221.20 per week to pay for food, gas, electric, council tax, food, cleaning products, toiletries, clothes, water, rent/mortgage, etc. Ridiculous!

One day you will also be a pensioner. Good luck!

Yep. And he’ll STILL be waiting for his new home and £300 off his energy bill…..

As a minimum.

Hopefully most people have made some retirement provisions that aren't based on just what the government will provide.

However if that is all the income they have, and they are renting, there will also be housing benefit. Most mortgage providers won't lend past state pension age unless you can prove income in retirement from private pensions, so there shouldn't be many people with mortgages and only the state pension.

I have no sympathy for people who have intended to purely live off the state pension in retirement. It is well publicised how low it is. No one gets to 68 thinking they will be getting 30k pa from the government and is then surprised it is only 220pw.

Pensioners on the basic SRP will get most of their rent and Council Tax paid anyway through Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction. So £221.20 per week seems a reasonable amount for a single pensioner to live on, especially when you consider the single person rate of UC for an under 25 year old is about £72 per week, or £91 per week if aged over 25.

Hmmm OK, OK. So let's look at those who have paid off their mortgage 👏. Let's take into consideration those who had personal/work pensions. 👏 Great so far. Then we look at those who own their own home. Brilliant.

Fab. They've achieved what everyone would hope for. They get ill, can't live or cope with their existence, need to pay for help. How the hell do they continue living in their home, pay for meals on wheels (or whatever it's now called), a cleaner once a week, food, heating etc. Their outgoings are increased considerably.

Then there are those who live in rented accommodation who need the same care, they're not being supported in any additional way, but still need, and deserve the same help. Where do they go for additional financial support?

They get a social care financial assessment like everyone else and then pay a few pound a week towards care that costs thousands and the rest of the cost is picked up by the tax payer.

We sit on different sides of the fence and will never agree.

Neither of my parents had personal pensions. My mum is 75 and still working. Home owner, mortgage free. Recently downsized following the death of my dad (he had dementia so needed the care you mention)

My parents in law never worked a day in their life, claimed every penny the state would give them and live a very comfortable life in their social housing. My FIL has carers 4 times a day. They pay about £30 a month towards his care.

I have lived experience and I still have zero sympathy for WASPIs and anyone who doesn't plan for retirement.

ETA my mum didn't downsize to pay for dads care. He was awarded continuing health care so his care was paid for by the NHS.

I just heard Peter Mandelson described as 'a master of spin'. In plain english that means: 'A professional liar'. I make no judgement on that, if that's what you want to do with your life so be it. I'm just sick of these bullshit terms like 'spin doctor'. :cautious:
The jobs of spin doctors seem interesting to me. I know it’s part of PR but would love an insight into how decisions on what to spin and how to spin it are made
