I think there's a lot to say about this group of women and what they do with their privilege but I personally don't find the appearance discussion too relevant here.

you can argue that dolly’s appearance is indicative of her immaturity though, indicative of her struggling to “find herself” on the basis that she’s never had at real struggle and exists in a bubble of extreme privilege.

as Hannah, from the burbs and recieving a private education before returning to her parents’ detached house, you can see how she’s tried to… obfuscate this very comfortable but bland start to life. She’s chosen a new, unusual name for herself. She tries to emulate a cooler, more exotic German singer from the 60s.

the result is that, now Dolly is in her 30s she’s still living the same life she did in her early 20s. She’s still styling herself and dressing herself in the same way pretty much. She uses her clothing to try and brand herself, as a bohemian party girl.

the reality is, I suspect, a woman with arrested development who doesn’t know how to grow. Who, despite portraying herself as something very different - is actually a well off, privately educated woman from outer London who probably is building a property portfolio and doesn’t much care for people who are different to her (as much as she might refer to her privilege in interviews to stay on the right side of PC).

That I would agree with, that image and presentation are important. I guess the idea that people should dress a certain way when they get older and whether they look old / fat / haggard is less relevant.

Yeah I agree but this is a gossip site and Dolly sells herself on her appearance, you see worse on other influencer threads :) To be honest I think appearance is fair game if you post thirst traps etc like Dolly does, not so much if it’s nothing to do with your ‘public figure’ status

Dolly’s appearance is part of her brand, ultimately. No one is buying her books because they are well written or uniquely creative storytelling - it’s because she appeals to women in a specific way, and brands herself in order to do so.

in a way I guess, we all use clothing to brand ourselves. Dolly’s just happens to be very public and to a larger audience

Her whole personality is a copy and paste construct. A little bit Nico, a smattering of Kate Moss, some Brigitte Bardot, a hint of Amy Winehouse, not forgetting Nora Ephron, Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick.

then she’ll post a selfie and talk about how she stuck to a “fashion moment” wearing a non descript Adidas sports hoodie, until it became fashionable the “second” time around because she’s so ✨quirky ✨ and ✨witty ✨, with zero awareness or sense of irony given that sports wear and hoodies were synonymous with “chavs” and and the working class, and thus had social stigma attached, “the first time” they were fashionable, before it became co-opted into yuppie leisurewear.

Dolly’s been on a million dates for stories but I bet she’s never been in a serious relationship with anyone who isn’t upper middle class. That’s why she’s so disingenuous..
I think - I don’t think I’ve imagined this - that ages ago she used to go out with Lloyd Griffith of Soccer AM/stand up comedy fame - an odd pair!

That was probably because he was famous/bohemian :) I stand corrected though!
Do we think she sleeps her way to the top to get book/film deals/columns etc- she’s the type to use sex and relationships as a tool/weapon? Tell me off if that’s too harsh even for Tattle, I know you guys will ;)

Yeah I know Dolly has a boyfriend now so not now, but previously :)

Has anyone heard of Lucy Mangan? She used to write for Stylist and now pops up now and then writing about 'issues' :)

I know this is really mean but I subscribe to stylist and she was always featured in it with some cringey pouty selfie and it really bugs me??? I hate selfies in general I guess. She also looks like a catfish. Sorry.

I remember Holly Bourne moaning on Twitter about Wordle being too hard because it had a slightly obscure word and flouncing in a hilariously OTT way. I started reading her murder book (can't remember the name) and gave up because it was crap.
The Cows was hilariously bad, me and my mum share a kindle library which is why I read it but, it's OKAY not to be a writer. Nobody is forced to do it, DOP is a much more natural presenter or vintage clothing seller.
I recently got Adults by Emma Jane Unsworth out of the library, I read 100 pages and returned it, it reminded me of The Cows with the with an influencer/blogger storyline that reads as outdated as soon as its published. On the cover there are recommendations from Jessie Burton (I liked the miniaturist!) plus old faves Dolly and Marian who'll say anything's good.

Did anyone read Emma Jane Unsworths recent book about having a kid/being depressed? Can’t think what it’s called and can’t be bothered googling it.
I read it until the page when she physically shakes her baby and I actually put the book in the bin.
Seems like it’s trendy to hate your baby when they pop out?!??
I was disgusted.
