Tom Hiddleston #8 Fifty shades of blue

I hate when they update book covers with the faces of actors. I love Tom but I knew the book before and the original cover is really gorgeous.

I do think that Claire Danes is better than Keira Knightley. I liked Keira in her early days but when she got "serious" I thought she really was not that good. I think she tends to overact. I don´t know Claire Danes so well (I never watched Homeland that much) but this role is a bit challenging in the sense that while she starts as a the main character, she basically disappears in the end of the book and is sometimes described as an unstable (like that she gets excited about something very fast but loses interest also very fast - including "new people") and a bit petty. However her chemistry with Will is sparkling even on the pages of the book. So I am curious how is she going to do it.
I am also curious about the first episode - if they will skip the full descriptions and will jump straight into the moment Cora meets Will. He appears pretty late in the book (but quickly becomes the main character)
It is actually pretty difficult to adapt, part of it is hapenning in letters, so I am really curious and excited about TES :)

I like Keira Knightley but I do think I’ll like Claire better in this role. I agree about Keira overacting (Claire does too sometimes but she also can be incredibly convincing). I used to watch her in My So-Called Life with Jared Leto so she’s a big part of my childhood. And of course Romeo and Juliet. I just can never fully forgive her for what she did in real life. I know you shouldn’t judge an actor or actress on what they do in their personal lives but it leaves such a bad taste in my mouth.

Regardless I think she’ll be better in the role than Keira would have been. I think she and Tom will have great chemistry.

What did she do in real life?

She had an affair with Billy Crudup while he was with Mary Louise Parker and Mary was 7 months pregnant. Billy left Mary for her and yes that is more on him but she imo she shouldn’t have a- begun an affair with a man in a relationship/about to be a father and b- should have said she wouldn’t continue it. My issue with her lies both in her actions and her distinct lack of remorse after the fact. I don’t like how she talked about it in retrospect, basically saying that it wasn’t fair for people to vilify her for it and saying it was something she had to explore- she only seemed to care about how it affected her and not the 7 month pregnant woman who was cheated on and abandoned. It makes me sad that she wasn’t able to empathize with Mary even after having her own pregnancy and child. But again, that has nothing to do with her acting. It just makes it hard personally for me to like her.

It's more common with actors than you and some get hushed up. Some for whatever reason it seems to just be forgiven and forgotten by the industry. I can think of a few in the latter category and some are household names in major franchises. The ones in the first category that get it hushed up I think are probably worse as they've never truly acknowledged it. I can think of both men and women in this category and one was recently outed for it but for others there's been clues and I don't mean just blinds on gossip sites. I'm same as you I can't stand people like this.

That is why it bothers me that Tom, who never really did anything morally bad, got almost kicked back to acting school after he said something in th GG speech where he was nervous. Like, seriously. It seems like being a nice guy is not really in fashion or better - there are some we know are genuinely good people and keep being adored and appreciated for that (Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep) and then you have people like Tom who makes one misstep and is reminded like 7 years or so later. I swear, when I see "privilged white man" I feel already sick like it is his fault he was born as a white guy who happened to go to school (the fact his father worked his ass to get where he is now, obviously doesn´t matter) - and it is also rasistic thing to say.
What is incredibly cringeworthy, watching the speech now (when I watched the first time, I had no idea there was something wrong with it - and still isn´t, no matter what tabloid likes to claim), you see guys like Christian Slater who had problems with drug abuse and sexual attacks
I mean, then you have RDJ who basically redeemed himself and is a story of a successful redemption but then you have these guys who on one hand, have constant problems for which an ordinary person would have been sent to prison long time ago. And who somehow "compensate" their shortcomings in life by doing charity and supporting "the correct politics" so then it is OK to be arrested for drunk driving here and there as long as you say this politician or this guy is bad but I support this popular choice so I can keep my job.

No wonder Tom stays out of twitter....you say one word, or one bad line and you are done. Maybe we should be grateful the apparent terrible thing he was supposed to say happened already back in 2016 when twitter nazis didn´t exist in such huge numbers like today.

I hope the current situation, when we face WWIII will give people a bit different perspective about what is important but it seems, in the past few days, that the further west it is, the less they care about what is going on in Ukraine, while we here, Eastern and Central Europe, face an incredible strain on schooling and health system, refugees are already sleeping in school gyms on the ground but all people care further west is if they will be able to buy the latest Playstation without it getting too expensive....(Remarque´s book Shadows in Paradise is a great example of this attitude)
Sorry for getting away from the topic....the situation here is getting worse, not better so it is a bit depressing...sorry for wandering away a bit

Anyway...then there is Tom, who once dated Taylor Swift (if it was PR and whose is not important) and said one bad line in Golden Globes speech and is almost doomed So this hypocrisy really annoys me.

I have to agree with you. It was crazy the amount of backlash over nothing (imho). There is a very strange amount of hypocrisy within the Hollywood sphere, so I certainly don’t blame Tom for taking a step back from socials. I wouldn’t wanna get questioned, called racist, or be tit on for things I said or did with good intentions. Would you believe I even saw some people on Twitter trying to start crap about his relationship and having “white savior” connotations?? Like WTF 🙃

Thanks for sharing this! I never knew about Claire’s personal life, only acting career, but gosh…it does change the vision I had of her now. 😅 I was always associated her with her role as Beth in Little Women and her iconic role in Romeo and Juliet. Wasn’t she in Stardust with Charlie Cox too? I think she’s a decent actress, but it really depends on the role. Hopefully TES won’t be a miss! 🤞🏼

I HATE that clip of Christian Slater looking so disgusted by Tom’s speech, as if he has any right to feel superior to anyone. And I had liked him before that from Heathers and True Romance but it just felt so unnecessarily snarky.

I still maintain that if it hadn’t been for Hiddleswift, the reaction to the speech would have been different. People had already decided he was a self-important ponce who wanted fame at any cost. If he had given the speech in 2014 I think the response would have been very different- people may have just thought it was long winded (which it was) but I don’t think the backlash would have been as severe.

Absolutely and as @Jara said that makes it all the more infuriating that Tom was chastised for a harmless speech when other actors have done actual problematic things and are held in higher regard.

Oh and Claire was actually a guest on the podcast Zawe was hosting and it was a great conversation- they did talk about Beth in Little Women. If I didn’t know about the other stuff I wouldn’t mind her. I won’t hold it against her while watching the show but I probably won’t watch any promotional stuff with just her if Tom isn’t involved.

It is infuriating when you know there's stars both male and female that have cheated on former partners (and the whole set knew), left pregnant partners or partners with kids or pretended to be single when they weren't in order to be with someone else and the injured party asked to stay quiet in order to preserve careers. In these peoples cases I'm same as you I can watch them on screen but I can't watch them in interviews etc where they act all wholesome (and I mean both male and female actors) and you wonder why other people like Tom (and others) are made a fool of for the slightest little thing.

Maybe Tom is attacked for little things because there is not much to write about. He is a boring patron, let´s face it. I have this with Hugh Jackman, who is incredibly great guy, is very active in SM but they have "nothing" on him (has been married for over 20 years, no scandals). Sure, there is this "He has mother complex because his wife is 13 years older" followed by "he must be gay" nonsense but then he once appeared at some party where Ivanka Trump attended and everybody went after his throat because....they had nothing better to write about.
Same with Tom, I think. That is why they keep bringing up Taylor Swift - I saw a headline with "Is Tom Hiddleston over Taylor Swift?" in an article about the engagement as if he cried himself to sleep that they are not together anymore or whatever....7 years later, when he has been in a relationship for some time. I guess that is how this works but the hypocrisy annoys me.

Anyway, a bit of Tom on radio, talking about I saw The Light on BBC Radio 2 (I always get goosebumps when I hear Tom singing....he should do more)
Starts about 30 mins in.

Actually no :D I have don´t know how I got this idea. I am registered in only two other forums where I am active, and I randomly came up with this one at them (one of them being Doctor Who forum) and the usual one I used to have was taken for some reason.) and this one just somehow came to me. I used to love creating random names so I guess that is my special ability :D
What movie was it? :)

What did Tom say in his Golden Globes speech?

He was accepting for The Night Manager and he started talking about how he had gone to the countries that it is based on to do humanitarian and how people came up to him and told him the show brought them joy, he called himself a humanitarian, he called Doctors Without Borders by their French name- it was very pretentious but harmless. (Btw I did that from memory so I could be misremembering or leaving something out, I’d rather not watch it again as it makes me sad).

He was clearly not prepared to win and didn’t have a planned speech and it ended up sounding very self congratulatory which I really don’t think was his goal. He was trying to draw attention to the work he does and that DWB do, not for a pat on the back but I think to bring awareness and explain why he is so proud of his show. But people really went at him for it both in the media and on twitter, saying he had a white savior complex etc. He ended up issuing an apology on facebook for his “inelegant delivery.”

The thing that bugs the crap out of me is that many actors have used their thank you speech to get on a soapbox and talk about what people can do to help. I think the problem here was 1- that it sounded like a humble brag 2- that people thought he was, for lack of a better word, a douchebag after Taylor, and 3- it went on for a long time without reaching a point. A reporter afterwards asked him if he heard what people were tweeting and then read him some of it ON CAMERA and you can see all the joy of winning leave him immediately.

Not to be dramatic but I swear that moment changed him and had a lasting impact on his relationship with speaking in public. It’s all on youtube.

THIS! I absolutely 100% believe it had an impact on him. This is why he is so careful whenever he speaks in public. How he takes extra time to try and formulate a response when asked questions. I don’t know if this was always the case, but perhaps the scrutiny and backlash could also have contributed to his anxious/nervous gestures we were discussing in the previous thread.

I had NO idea what was so wrong with that speech. I didn't see it at the time but when I went looking for it I kept thinking that I hadn't found the right one bc I was like wait that's what everyone was moaning so much about? And I get that privileged people often need to check their privilege (I am one who does as well) & sometimes genuinely can't relate to others who have bigger problems than they have ever experienced. I don't think Tom deserved to be dragged for it.

I think I might not get what all of the fury was about because understood what he was trying to say about being told that the show brought them joy, because there are movies & tv shows that genuinely help me cope. I don't think that's unusual either. Younger ppl than me talk about "comfort" shows or movies & I've wholeheartedly embraced this term for what has got me through this or that bad period in my life. I've always had them but never thought of them like that before. I think he's attuned to the relationship of the audience to a work because he has talked about experiencing it himself from the audience side. I can see how patting yourself on the back for helping ppl as a creator in an obscenely well paid art form in the face of life or death situations would be in bad taste, but even as I say that I think that there are people who have been clinging to their sanity throughout this pandemic thanks in part to having Marvel shows to look forward to *raises hand.* I don't begrudge him or anyone in his position a little bit of satisfaction from helping someone, because they did.

OK at the risk of oversharing, something in the Loki series was responsible for me having a pretty significant emotional breakthrough which helped me to begin to heal from some pretty debilitating trauma. This happened because of the show but it was also purely accidental in that it tweaked my brain in exactly the right way to cause me think through some things. I wouldn't BEGIN to know what to say to him or Kate Herron or Sophia diMartino or anyone else to thank them because helping me was a lucky accident. But if some doctor told Tom that the night manager helped him get through some stress or whatever he said I get that completely & its real & not a stupid thing.

Is it just me or has anyone else seen the hype for Essex Serpent come and go quite quickly? By that I mean that articles about it aren't on digital media anymore, some you can search and find it but it's not in their main articles list anymore or they've removed it completely. I get that some digital media outlets will remove content based on the interaction with it but that's worrying if it was only there last week and now hard to find.

I absolutely believe his fidgeting is part of a nervous behavior, or even just part of a distracted behavior as he is stalling/thinking and I do think he puts a lot of care into what he says. He used to be a lot more cheeky and insinuate things and now he is much more straight laced (could also be a getting older thing).

Definitely not a stupid thing- that is what art (all forms of it) are for. Yes they are for entertainment but also for us to find things to relate to. All sorts of things can touch us in different ways. Sometimes it pops up in places we wouldn’t expect too, like a superhero show or a sitcom.

Yeah it is really weird that they seemingly started promotion and then..crickets. There isn’t THAT much time before it starts, you’d think they would have released some sort of teaser already. I am dying to see some actual clips.

It definitely seems to have waves of being in the news. Mostly last year while they were filming it. It was all over the place it seemed.

I've followed it myself from the first inklings of a rumour of Tom being involved last February all the way through filming. I've seen varying degrees of excitement for the show. But I honestly don't know how much outside of fandom its been searched for etc. Because I was personally actively looking for updates etc on filming I searched daily for updates etc in local groups where filming was taking place. I think it's been there for me alot more than most.

Alot of locals didn't know who Tom was but they were excited to see what was being filmed in their respective villages and towns. Some of them have since become fans of Tom after talking at length with some of them.

I think there is more excitement for the show coming out from members of the supporting cast and crew that i was lucky enough to become friends with during the course of filming. Most of them having not read the book or knowing what is going to happen beyond the scenes they were involved in. So they're eager to see the finished product.

I saw this on Instagram last week saying that they were two weeks away from finishing the sfx editing on it. Which brings them to finishing it sometime this week. So I imagine that we will see a trailer soon.
