I thought the same thing. But apparently the landlord said they're allowed to paint the place. So when they leave they'll probably just fill the holes and paint over it.

There are probably more tax efficent things to do with the equity in his propert(ies), than pay 40% tax on a rental income plus capital gains when selling.

I’d have sold the cottage ( fairly local and the location wasn’t the best) and kept The Lodge which I thought was lively. He could have rented that out either as a short/long term or as an Air bnb. So odd to buy it and sell it so quickly.
